Back in 2014, Sony and Mattel announced plans to make a Barbie movie. However, the project was still stuck at the development stage, and there was no further talk about who could play the main role in the film. The Hollywood Reporter managed to find out that now the Warner Bros. studio is going to send the cult toy to the big screens.Moreover, the source says that Oscar nominee Margot Robbie can play the lead role in the film, and Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman) is tipping the director's chair. Negotiations with the latter are at an early stage, and therefore its involvement in the project remains questionable. When Amy Schumer and Anne Hathaway applied for the role of Barbie, the film was supposed to tell about a doll that does not fit into the standards of an ideal Barbieland and gets into the real world, where being different from the rest is a virtue, not a disadvantage. Whether WB will stick to this particular idea is not yet clear. Sony still hasn't even been able to come up with a suitable scenario for Mattel's management. The company is very sensitive to the project due to the fact that Barbie is the most popular doll on the globe, and its sales in monetary terms have exceeded the $ 3 billion mark.  When Sony lost the rights to make the Barbie movie, Mattel's bosses found a new partner in the WB. Robbie has an agreement with the major, and therefore she will probably also act as a producer of the picture. The actress should also star in Birds of Prey, and the Barbie tape will have to wait at least a couple of years.
