Money is the best persuasion

Image It's no secret that many Dream Factory figures consider modern online services a major threat to the film industry. Some time ago, there was even a fierce debate in the highest echelons of Hollywood over whether films should be allowed on streaming platforms to compete for Oscars and other prestigious awards. It looks like streaming services are finally ready to strike back at their enemies and envious people.

Over the course of several years, online cinemas have suffered numerous attacks against them, but almost unquestioningly fulfilled all the requirements for films participating in the Oscar race. The main headache for streaming executives was and remains the rule that films must receive a certain number of sessions in one of the Los Angeles cinemas. As a result, Netflix and the company thought that it would be easier for them to purchase or create their own cinema networks than to spend money on renting halls every year.

One way or another, the films of the streaming giants began to visit and win at almost all the world's leading film forums. The cherry on top of the cake, of course, will be the triumph at the Oscars. This year, streaming platforms finally secured a solid contender for Best Picture with Alfonso Cuaron's drama Roma.

The presentation of the nominees for the "Oscar - 2019" will take place at the beginning of next week. According to Fast Company, online service Netflix has taken unprecedented steps to ensure Cuaron's film earns additional votes from members of the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Rumor has it that Roma's Oscar campaign has become one of the most expensive in the history of the film industry. Usually Hollywood studios keep secret the budgets of promotions for films involved in the struggle for valuable trophies. Financial analysts believe that the creators of the Social Network have spent the most substantial sum in the last decade. Then, about $ 25 million was invested in additional advertising for the biographical drama. It is rumored that Netflix forked out more than this amount. Curiously, Roma's production budget is estimated at only $ 15 million.
An insidious plan of revenge against Hollywood studios already worked at the recent Golden Globe Awards. Then the Netflix bosses sent out dark chocolate kits to representatives of the Foreign Press Association, accompanied by personal messages from actress Yalitsa Aparisio. The voting participants were delighted with this token of attention and awarded Roma with four gold statuettes. Then Netflix began to seduce the Academy members. First, the online service sent out posters autographed by Alfonso Cuaron to academics, and then arranged a series of cocktail parties for them. Rumor has it that the host of one of the social events was not someone, but Angelina Jolie herself. To create additional excitement around the film, the bosses of the streaming service also laid out almost $ 200,000.

Some movie studios have already begun to complain that the rich online service is breaking the rules of competition. If modest independent companies really can hardly afford to waste money, then the Hollywood money-bags, perhaps, can only blame their own greed. It is interesting that earlier the studio bosses for some reason preferred to close their eyes to the methods of work of the same Harvey Weinstein. For a long time, the producer gave the participants of the Oscar committees valuable gifts, which, thanks to loopholes in the rules of the Academy, could not be considered pure bribes. Only a couple of years ago, Weinstein finally freed the place of the main driver of the Dream Factory, getting caught on sexual crimes.
