The Last Hero of Baseball

Image Legendary Pictures decided to tell the world the life story of the legendary Puerto Rican baseball player Roberto Clemente, who was a true role model both on and off the sports field. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the as-yet-untitled biographical drama will be based on Pulitzer Prize laureate David Maranis's book “The Passion and Grace of Baseball's Last Hero”.

Clemente was born on August 18, 1934 in the Puerto Rican city of Barrio San Anton. From a young age, Roberto began to help his father, who worked at a sugar factory, to feed his seven children. The boy spent all his free time on the baseball courts. As a teenager, he was invited to one of the teams in the local amateur league.

Roberto signed his first professional contract at the age of 18. He quickly became one of the key players of his team and attracted the attention of scouts from the United States. Clemente made her debut in the American Major League Baseball in April 1955. In his eighteen seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates, he has twice won the World Series and has played fifteen MLB All-Stars.

Despite substantial fees and a rapidly growing popularity, Roberto managed to avoid star fever. Every off-season he was actively involved in charity work. When a massive earthquake struck Managua in December 1972, Clemente could not stay away. He organized the delivery of essential goods to Nicaragua, but soon found that the first three shipments were stuck in transit. The famous baseball player decided to rent a private jet to personally take humanitarian aid to the victims of the earthquake.

Shortly after takeoff, the aircraft's engine failed and the plane crashed into the water. The athlete's body was never found. In the spring of the following year, Roberto Clemente was posthumously inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame and awarded the US Congressional Gold Medal. He is also the name given to the annual Major League Baseball Award, which is given to players who demonstrate outstanding performance in the game and in community service.

The adaptation of Maranis' book will be done by the American poet and literary critic Rowan Ricardo Phillips, and the director's chair of the film will be entrusted to Ezra Edelman, who won an Oscar and an Emmy last year for his work on the acclaimed documentary O. Jay: Made in America. "
