Mystery at the bottom of the ocean

Image Last August, we reported that Ridley Scott's Scott Free Films and British studio New Sparta Films had acquired the film rights to David Sharp's The Greatest Secret Mission in CIA History. As it became known to the publication Deadline, the film project about the sinking of the Soviet submarine K-129 has finally found a scriptwriter.

The script for the tape, tentatively titled Neither Confirm Nor Deny, will be written by David Collard. The American began his career as an actor, but then retrained as a screenwriter. From 2000 to 2003, he was a member of the authoring group of the animated series Family Guy, after which he went on a solo voyage. The debut work of the screenwriter in the world of big cinema was the crime drama "Out of Time" with Denzel Washington in the title role.

The title of the film from Scott Free Films and New Sparta Films is a reference to the standard CIA excuse they use when answering tricky questions from journalists. During the Cold War, intelligence officials used the expression “We can neither confirm nor deny” when there was talk in the American press that the US authorities were hiding information about the K-129 discovery.

The Soviet submarine disappeared from radar in the spring of 1968. A few months later, American sailors discovered it at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean near the island of Oahu. President Richard Nixon gave the order to raise the K-129, but chose to keep the operation a secret from the USSR and the rest of the world. CIA experts developed the top-secret Azorian mission, in which movie mogul Howard Hughes played a key role.

Ridley Scott will be joined by Christopher Simon (The Bible) and Academy Award-nominated Kevin J. Walsh (Manchester by the Sea) on the political thriller production team.
