Venom ruined Marvel's plans

Image Over the past three decades, the supervillain Venom has fought Peter Parker on the pages of graphic novels, various animated series and even the Hollywood blockbuster Spider-Man 3: Enemy Reflected. It looks like the alien symbiote has finally managed to inflict irreparable damage on the young defender of New York. According to Business Insider, the success of Venom has jeopardized the future of Spider-Man in the MCU.

Hollywood insiders share information that in the event of Venom's failure at the box office, Sony's management was ready to sit down at the negotiating table to discuss a new Spider-Man custody deal with Marvel. Recall that Peter Parker returned to his native land in 2015 and has already appeared in such Marvel blockbusters as Captain America: Civil War, Spider-Man: Homecoming and Avengers: Infinity War. If Venom had failed to recoup the budget, it would have been more than just extending the deal on favorable terms for Marvel. Rumor has it that Sony would have to think about selling the entire rights to Parker and other characters in Spider-Man comics to Kevin Feige's company.

In the end, however, the film about the adventures of Eddie Brock turned out to be financially successful. Although the film did not gain much success with critics, it managed to earn more than $ 541 million at the worldwide box office. Considering that its production budget is estimated at $ 100 million, this result should be considered very impressive. Thanks to Venom's high box office, Sony has begun developing its own superhero universe and has already given the green light to Morbius. According to financial analysts, the situation in the negotiations between the two film companies has changed dramatically and now develops in such a way that Marvel needs Spider-Man more than Sony in cooperation with Feige's studio.

Last spring, producer Amy Pascal made it clear that the current agreement between the studios was drafted in such a way that Sony could soon regain all rights to Parker. The company now has additional leverage on Marvel. Sony executives may resort to banal blackmail and announce that they intend to use Spider-Man in their new franchise. If Feige doesn't fight for the young superhero, Spider-Man: Far From Home will be the last movie with Parker's participation in the MCU. In this case, Spidey will appear in the Venom world in the coming years, but, with a high degree of probability, in a completely new guise.

If Marvel has long-term plans for Parker, it will have to renegotiate the contract with the current copyright holders on less favorable terms. It is not excluded that Sony will be able to ensure that the superhero participated in two MCUs at once. With this development of events, Tom Holland will certainly remain the performer of the role of the friendly neighbor of New Yorkers. Sony's management has already left a loophole for this option, lowering Venom's rental rating from R to more acceptable for the Marvel universe PG-13.

The Marvel studio has a way to get rid of the partnership with Sony: it can still try to buy out the rights to all the characters in the Spider-Man universe at once, even considering that the commercial success of Venom has certainly raised the transaction amount to sky-high heights. Sony is unlikely to turn down a cash cow, but Marvel and Disney know how to make offers that are difficult to refuse. The recent deal with Fox once again proved that Walt Disney's empire can playfully absorb other Hollywood majors. It is possible that for the sake of the rights to Spider-Man, Disney management will seriously consider the option of acquiring the entire Sony film department.
