Over the next 18 years, renowned animators have filmed over a hundred short stories of the bitter rivalry between a cat and a mouse for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, seven of which won an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film.

Warner Bros. Studio thought about rebooting the franchise back in 2009. In April 2015, the heads of the studio unexpectedly changed the vector of the project's development and decided to shoot an ordinary animated film. As it became known to Variety, during the long downtime, the studio management again changed the project format. The visually updated version of Tom and Jerry is expected to be a blend of feature film and 3D animation. Tim Storey, director of the Ride Together comedy and the Fantastic Four dilogy, was invited to arrange a meeting of live actors with cartoon characters. If the director accepts the studio's invitation, work on the film can start next year.
