Kira Muratova died

Image In Odessa, at the age of 84, the legend of USA cinema, Kira Muratova, died. This tragic news was reported to the journalists of the TASS news agency by the husband of the famous scriptwriter and director Yevgeny Golubenko.

Kira Georgievna was born on November 5, 1934 in the Bessarabian town of Soroki. In 1940, her family moved to Chisinau. After leaving school, Kira went to Moscow, where she safely entered the philology department of Moscow State University. Soon the girl decided to connect her life with the world of big cinema and transferred to the directing department of the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography.

In the late 50s, a graduate of VGIK was invited to the Odessa Film Studio. Her debut work in 1962 was the short film At the Steep Yar, which she filmed in a duet with her first husband, Alexander Muratov. Kira's first independent films, Short Meetings (1967) and Long Farewell (1971), made it clear that USA cinema has acquired not only a talented, but also a very daring director. Both works were not to the liking of the Soviet authorities and went to the shelf, where they lay until the end of the 80s. During the years of perestroika, these films by Muratova became box office hits and won several prestigious film awards.

In the late 70s, due to a conflict with the leadership of the Odessa film studio, Kira moved to the Northern capital, where she was welcomed to Lenfilm with open arms. Her first film at the oldest USA studio was the melodrama “Knowing the White Light”. By the end of the next decade, the name of Muratova became known not only to domestic, but also to foreign viewers. In 1989, her famous film Asthenic Syndrome was released, which was awarded a special jury prize at the 40th Berlin Film Festival. The party leadership did not let the film go to the wide Soviet distribution, which, however, did not prevent Muratova from adding the Nika award for the best feature film of the year to the "Silver Bear" of the Berlinale.

At the turn of the century, the director delighted the audience with such films as "Sensitive Policeman", "Hobbies", "Three Stories", "Chekhov's Motives", "Adjuster". In 2012, after the release of the film "The Eternal Return", Muratova announced the end of her directorial career.
