The creator of ”Singing in the Rain” Stanley Donen has died

Image Sad news came from America. Oscar winner Stanley Donen, who bore the unofficial title of the King of Hollywood Musicals, died in New York at the 95th year of his life.

Stanley was born on April 13, 1924 in Columbia, North Carolina. At the age of nine, the boy watched the music tape "Flight to Rio" and was determined to connect his life either with dancing or with cinema. It was destiny that Donen would revolutionize both arts.

After graduating from high school, Stanley entered the Department of Psychology at the University of North Carolina. Already in his second year of study, he realized that he was not very interested in science. Donen dropped out of university and went to seek his fortune in New York. The plastic and expressive dancer was immediately noticed by the casting director of Broadway musicals. Stanley made his Big Apple stage debut in Joey's Buddy, starring Gene Kelly. The latter soon became a prominent figure in Hollywood and advised Donen to look at the Dream Factory.

Stanley moved to sunny California in 1943. Over the next six years, he established himself as a talented choreographer and helped create many musical numbers in famous Hollywood films. In 1949 Donen tried his hand at directing for the first time. His debut feature film was the Musical Leave to the City, starring Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra and Jules Manshin. The film successfully paid off the budget, earned a warm welcome in the press and won an Oscar in the Best Music category.

The success of Dismissal allowed Donen to sign a seven-year contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. The bosses of the famous film company did not lose by signing a novice director. Stanley donated many paintings to MGM that were successful both in the box office and in the artistic sense. The cherry on top is the legendary musical Singing in the Rain, which is considered not just an ideal example of its genre, but one of the greatest films in the history of cinema.

In the filmography of Stanley Donen, you can also find such famous films as "Funny Face", "Blinded by Desires", "Charade" and "Two on the Way." During his career, he has nominated five times for the Directors Guild of the United States, but for some reason has never been nominated for an Oscar. The well-deserved award of the American Film Academy found the director only in 1998, when he received a gold statuette for his special contribution to the development of cinema.
