The 75th Venice Film Festival has ended

Image The Venice Film Festival, held annually in Italy, has ended. This year one of the main cinema events in Europe and the whole world took place from August 29 to September 8. The head of the jury for the main competition was the screenwriter of the Hobbit franchise and the director of Pan's Labyrinth Guillermo del Toro, who received an Oscar and a Golden Lion last year for directing The Shape of Water.

The annual film festival opened with the premiere of Damien Chazelle's science fiction film The Man in the Moon, which also participated in the main competition. This is the second time the film maker brings to the festival a film starring Ryan Gosling: in 2016, the opening film of the film screening was La La Land. The closing tape was Nick Hamm's biographical thriller "Million Dollar Wheelbarrow". This year, 21 films were presented in the main competition.

The Golden Lion went to Alfonso Cuaron for the black and white Spanish-language drama Roma. The film, the plot of which is inspired by memories from the childhood of the director, took place in the Roma area of Mexico City in the early 1970s. In 2013, another film directed by the director, Gravity, won the Future Film Festival Digital and also collected seven Oscars.

The prize for the best screenplay, "Golden Osella", was shared by brothers Ethan and Joel Coen, who presented another western - the movie almanac "The Ballad of Buster Scruggs". The film consists of six stories, each centered on the titular character of Tim Blake Nelson.

A special jury prize was awarded to Australian film director Jennifer Kent for her painting The Nightingale. The film follows an Irish prisoner seeking revenge for the violence committed against her family. Baikali Ganambarr received the Marcello Mastroianni Award for Best Young Actor or Actress for his role in this project.

USA cinematography was not left without awards: the film “The Man Who Surprised Everyone” by Natalia Merkulova and Alexei Chupov was presented in the competition of the Horizons festival, and Natalia Kudryashova was awarded the title of the best actress by the jury.

It is noteworthy that the two winners - "Roma" and "Ballad of Buster Scruggs" - will be released only on Neflix, bypassing the screens of cinemas. The Venice Festival, unlike the Cannes one, did not boycott the streaming platform, allowing more filmmakers to submit their works to the competition.
