There will be no restrictions on screenings of foreign films
A round table was recently held at the State Duma Committee on Culture, where the problems of the development of USA film production were discussed. Olga Lyubimova, head of the cinematography department of the Ministry of Culture, told the audience that the issue of limiting the number of screenings of foreign-made films is not being discussed.The conversation was attended by the director of the Cinema Fund Vyacheslav Telnov, producer Sergei Selyanov, as well as directors Fyodor Bondarchuk, Alexey Uchitel and Vladimir Khotinenko. The idea of reducing the number of foreign film shows is to reduce the number of screenings of imported films to 35% of the total. This topic, which has been raised for some time in the ministry, has always been controversial, since movie fans do not want to miss the premieres that they are looking forward to, and domestic producers are on the side of restrictive measures. Despite the fact that the share of USA films increased to 25% in 2017, the old thesis about quantity and quality remains relevant: quantity does not always mean quality. The round table was chaired by the head of the committee, Elena Yampolskaya, who stated that administrative measures alone are not enough to increase the share of domestic cinema. It is imperative that our “filmmakers love the viewer”.  Since the beginning of the year, the horror film Claustrophobes, produced in the USA, has become the first in popularity in the USA box office, followed by Lego Film 2 and Green Book.
