Universal was inspired by Prince's work

Image Universal had acquired the rights to several classics from Prince's later work and are now producing the musical. This is reported by The Hollywood Reporter. However, the film will not become the biopic that Purple Rain was in its day. Just as the Mamma MIA! Franchise was staged based on ABBA's songs, the company plans to develop an original tape using ideas from the artist's music.

The film will be produced by Universal's Director of Worldwide Film and Music Distribution Michael Knobloch in collaboration with Sarah Scott (Ouiji: The Curse of the Devil's Board). Prince's estate advisor Troy Carter and Universal Record CEO Jody Gerson will serve as executive producers.

Prince is a multi-instrumentalist and virtuoso musician who has sold over 100 million records worldwide. He has earned nine Grammy awards, six American Music Awards, one Golden Globe, and an Academy Award for Best Song in a Purple Rain. In 2004, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Except "Mamma MIA!" Universal also boasts such successful musicals as Pitch Perfect and Les Miserables. The studio is currently working on the Last Christmas melodrama * based on the music of George Michael and the long-awaited film adaptation of Cats.
