The Upgrade Director will flee New York

Image The production of the Escape from New York remake is finally getting off the ground. Last year's Upgrade director and co-creator of Saw, Lee Whannell, will write the script for the Fox project. A reboot of John Carpenter's classic film has been in development for several years, but will now breathe new life into it.

Reportedly, Whannell may take the director's chair for the tape, which is still empty. Some time ago, Robert Rodriguez was listed as the director of the project, but he left this position. The final draft of the script was written by Neil Cross (Doctor Who). According to the source, the new author will leave the main elements of the plot intact, but bring something of his own.

This is Lee's second big studio deal this week. The filmmaker also recently took over as director of the remake of The Invisible Man for the Blumhouse and Universal film companies, which are relaunching a series of monsters from classic horror films following the failed start of the Dark Universe.

The original Escape from New York with Kurt Russell was released in 1981, the action of the film unfolded in 1997. According to the plot, New York turned into a huge prison, where the President of the United States accidentally turns out to be. The mission to save him is assigned to the criminal Serpent Pliskin (Russell) in exchange for freedom. The premiere of the sequel, entitled "Escape from Los Angeles", took place in 1996, but the film grossed a small box office and was not liked by critics.
