Jim Jarmusch and the Dead will open Cannes

Image When the committee of the main cinema event of the year, the Cannes Film Festival, was preparing to name the opening film of the show, everyone hoped with bated breath for Tarantino and his long-awaited dramedy "Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood." We still hope for Quentin's return to the Cote d'Azur, but at the same time we cannot but rejoice at the choice of the jury - to open Cannes this year it fell to the permanent participant of the show, Jim Jarmusch. His witty, cheeky, genre-pushing horror comedy The Dead Don't Die is a tribute to George Romero's films, which will also compete with the rest of the Main Competition Program for the Palme d'Or.

In the center of the plot of the thirteenth film in a row, Jarmusch is a provincial sleepy town in which all sorts of devilry is happening. Either the moon hangs so low, as if preparing to fall to Earth, then the animals go crazy. Scientists cannot find an explanation for all the strange events, and this is not surprising, given that they culminate in the rising of the dead from their graves. Residents of the town instantly arm themselves to the teeth to protect themselves from their former neighbors. It just turns out that they have a weakness not only for the brains of their victims, but also for what brought them pleasure in life - a cup of coffee or a glass of wine.

There is significant symbolism in the fact that it will be Jim with his new tape to open the Cannes Film Festival. The director's award for Best Debut in Stranger than Paradise, once won by the director, was a milestone in the history of American independent cinema. Since then, Jarmush regularly took part in the festival, was and remains one of the most welcome guests. For the last time the director brought to the French Riviera the soulful “Paterson”, beloved by the audience and critics, and the musical documentary “Gimme Danger” about Iggy Pop. Speaking of Iggy ... The Black Comedy Dead Don't Die also has"the greatest cast ever to be dismembered in a zombie movie". It stars Bill Murray, Adam Driver, Tilda Swinton, Chloe Sevigny, Steve Buscemi, Tom Waits and the same Iggy.

The Cannes Film Festival this year will take place from 14 to 25 May. The jury will be chaired by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, whose groundbreaking VR short "Flesh and Sand" shocked everyone in 2017. All programs of the show will be presented on April 18. In the meantime, we cross our fingers in the hope of getting into them (at least out of competition) Tarantino and Almodovar.
