Castling has occurred in the US box office
Last weekend, the Maze Runner triquel effortlessly took the Jumanji remake out of the box in the North American box office. However, over the weekend (February 2-4) the situation changed dramatically: as it turned out, Dwayne Johnson had more fans than Dylan O'Brien.Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle took the lead once again with $ 11 million in earnings over the weekend. Jake Kasdan's film has already grossed $ 352.6 million at home and is still the third highest grossing Sony release, gradually approaching the results of the second Spider-Man "($ 373.6 million). Although the Super Bowl weekend is traditionally considered unattractive for distributors, Call of the Jungle still managed to maintain its audience: it decreased by only 30%, while the main competitors of the blockbuster lost about half of the audience.  Continues "Jumanji" to conquer foreign film fans, regularly replenishing the picture's piggy bank. They added $ 12.6 million to Kasdan's tape last week, and the hefty $ 855.7 million makes Dwayne Johnson and the jungle a win. The Maze Runner franchise suffered the most from the fall in audience interest. Apparently, moviegoers don't care much about the fate of Thomas and the gliders, who have lost 58% of their audience. The collection of the picture last weekend amounted to only $ 10.2 million, and so far the tape of Wes Ball has managed to recapture a little more than half of the $ 62 million budget. To the delight of the creators of the blockbuster, the Death Cure is popular outside the US and has already raised $ 142.9 million.  The fact that critics reacted rather coolly to the triquel does not help to improve the situation. "The Maze Runner" has turned into a cliched and uninteresting action, and film fans should be glad that the third book by James Dashner, according to the good old tradition, was not split into two films. After the failure of "Divergent" it became clear that teenage film series had lost their former popularity, and, according to reviewers, the ending of "The Maze Runner" is another proof of this. The strong point of the triquel is the action game, in which Wes Ball has become very adept in recent years. The only newcomer to the wide distribution, the horror "Winchester. The House That Ghosts Built ”made his debut rather weak, but analysts did not expect any special agility from him. The gothic thriller started at $ 9.3 million, and even the presence of Oscar-winning Helen Mirren in the cast did not save the film, which earned the audience a low B- rating. The same rating was once received by "The Woman in Black" with Daniel Radcliffe, but she at least earned $ 54.3 million at the box office, and Winchester is not getting such amounts yet.  An important role in such a weak start was played by the reaction of critics: the rating of the picture on Rotten Tomatoes is only 10%. Reviewers call the thriller the first high-profile flop of 2018 and argue that the talent of the actors is wasted on a completely standard project about the supernatural. Despite the previous experience and technical expertise of Michael and Peter Spirigov, who previously shot the eighth Saw, ghost stories are definitely not their strong point. Moreover, analysts believe that Winchester's promotional campaign was unremarkable, and while some viewers knew that the film was about a real house, others associated the title of the film with the Winchester Brothers from Supernatural. "The Greatest Showman" remained in fourth place in the top 5. For several weeks in a row the musical never ceases to amaze with its ability to survive in difficult conditions, and the audience's interest in it does not fade away. An additional $ 7.8 million went to the picture's piggy bank, and she has at her disposal an amount of $ 137.5 million, which until recently seemed unattainable.  Western "Foes" failed to retain viewers, as old-timers do. Scott Cooper's film raised only $ 5.5 million last weekend and so far boasts a modest sum of $ 21.2 million. It seems that they will not be able to return the former glory to the "Foes" genre, although critics have found many advantages in the film, among them is an excellent cinematography work, talented play by Christian Bale and Rosamund Pike, whose characters you really empathize with. At the same time, the tape is overloaded with unnecessary characters and storylines, which ultimately distracts from the main idea.
