Reverse Lolita

Image According to The Guardian, a lost Stanley Kubrick script based on The Burning Secret was found. The script was discovered by the director's art specialist Nathan Adams, who was shocked by his find. Devoted fans of the great director have discussed the existence of the text for years. Kubrick is rightfully considered one of the most famous directors in history, so it's amazing to find the script behind his authorship almost 20 years after his death.

Nathan Abrams commented: “Kubrick fans knew he wanted to make this film, but no one was sure if he had finished the script. Now we know for sure that the script is complete, and we have a copy of it. ”.

Burning Mystery is an adaptation of a 1913 novella by Austrian writer Stefan Zweig. The book tells the story of a courteous man who befriends a ten-year-old boy. The man uses him to seduce the married mother of the child. However, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer did not green-light the project in 1956. Back then, Kubrick was not very popular and had just finished work on his third film, Murder.

MGM may have canceled the project because the director began work on Paths of Glory, breaking a contract with the studio. Others believe that Kubrick film producer James B. Harris decided the script wasn't good enough to make a movie based on it. However, Abrams believes that such a story was most likely seen as too risky during the times of strict morality in Hollywood. “The son unwittingly brought his mother and her lover together. It's a disturbing story about sexuality and child abuse, ”commented Abrams. He noted that the script is similar to Lolita, only the other way around: “In Burning Mystery” the main character befriends his son in order to get his mother. In Lolita the main character marries his mother in order to get to her daughter".

Kubrick co-wrote the screenplay with Calder Willingham. They later collaborated on the production of Trails of Glory. Abrams claims the script is over a hundred pages long and completely finished. Fans of Kubrick's work have only to wait for a director to be found to stage the film.

Zweig's book was already filmed - Andrew Birkin directed and wrote the script for the film of the same name.
