”Oscar - 2019” will not be a popularity contest

Image Last month, word came from Hollywood that in its pursuit of television ratings, the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is poised to introduce a number of innovations to its Academy Awards. Most of the questions from viewers and journalists were caused by the initiative of academics to create a category for popular films. As it became known to The Hollywood Reporter, the film organization surrendered under a barrage of criticism and decided to postpone the presentation of the new nomination until better times.

It was expected that the first golden idol in the category with the fluid formulation "For Excellence in Popular Cinema" will find its owner in February next year at the 91st Oscars. Many journalists and moviegoers quite rightly noted that the new nomination looks like a leftover from the master's table and at the same time diminishes the dignity of the participants in the struggle for victory in the Best Film category. Academy President John Bailey had no choice but to postpone the introduction of the 25th Oscar category.

To be honest, I didn’t expect such a violent reaction from journalists, - John admitted. "These same people have accused the Academy of elitism for many years and criticized us for not taking into account the tastes of the general public."

It is worth noting that the idea of the academics did not inspire enthusiasm not only among the press, but among the creators of Hollywood hits. For example, members of the Black Panther movie comics team recently admitted that they would prefer to receive a nomination for Best Film, rather than Most Popular Blockbuster.

According to John Bailey, Academy members will return to the issue of introducing a new category during the planning of the 2020 Oscars.
