Save Lieutenant Colonel Hambleton

Image 20th Century Fox will shed light on the US Army's most expensive search and rescue mission during the Vietnam War. According to Deadline, the Hollywood studio has acquired the rights to film adaptation of Stefan Talty's book Saving Bravo.

In his work, the famous American writer and journalist told the amazing story of the rescue of Lieutenant Colonel Isil Hambleton, who was almost captured by the Viet Cong. During the Vietnam War, Hambleton served as the navigator of the EB-66 electronic reconnaissance aircraft, which bore the call sign "Bat-21 Bravo". On April 2, 1972, the bomber was shot down by an anti-aircraft missile. Aisil was the only crew member who managed to eject from the plane. Fortunately for Hambleton, an observation vessel O-2 flew by and received his distress signal.

Aisil landed directly on enemy territory and by some miracle did not fall into the clutches of the enemy. At one time, the American took several survival courses, thanks to which he managed to hide in the jungle, waiting for help. Since Hambleton had direct access to classified data, the US authorities immediately gave the go-ahead for the rescue mission.

American aircraft tried several times to get close to the crash site of the EB-66, but received a serious rebuff. In five days, Vietcong artillery destroyed five enemy aircraft and inflicted significant damage on sixteen more aircraft. Ultimately, the US Army had to develop a plan for a ground operation. To save Hambleton, they sent an American fur seal Thomas Norris and an officer of the South Vietnamese Navy Nguyen Van Kayet, who managed to bypass several hundred enemies, pretending to be ordinary fishermen.

The search mission was completed eleven and a half days after the EB-66 crash. The story of Hambleton's miraculous rescue has already formed the basis of the painting Callsign Bet-21. Gene Hackman portrayed Isil in the 1988 film.
