Guillermo del Toro's Secret Reserves

Image Guillermo del Toro loves cinema, and so much so that before the Oscar winner was even criticized for the huge number of projects that were in his development. In Hollywood, you can never predict with certainty which idea will get the go-ahead from the studios and which will go to stock. In Del Toro's case, the director always played into the hands of the number of potential projects. When one stopped, the filmmaker switched to the other.

Guillermo del Toro decided to show film fans his secret reserves by tweeting a list of films he had already written scripts for, but which never made it to the big screens. Some of them will remain unfulfilled, while others may be lucky. Sometimes it takes years before an idea turns into a movie, and del Toro knows it like no one else: his animated version of Pinocchio eventually caught the interest of Netflix, although it has been in development since at least 2012.

The most ambitious and ambitious of all del Toro's projects is, perhaps, the film adaptation of the book "Ridges of Madness" by Howard Phillips Lovecraft. In 2010, it was announced that the adaptation would be produced by James Cameron, Tom Cruise signed on for the lead role, and the budget could have been $ 150 million. But the management of Universal canceled the project due to the fact that del Toro aimed at an R rating, while the studio demanded PG-13. But such an outcome of events freed the filmmaker's hands, and he signed up to create the "Pacific Rim".

In 2013, Guillermo del Toro proposed to Warner Bros. the idea of a film adaptation of the "Dark Justice League", which would bring together such comic book characters as Constantine, Swamp Thing, Zatanna, Dead Man and others. However, “Man of Steel” marked the beginning of the DC cinematic universe, and del Toro would have to fit his plan into a general framework, which he apparently refused to do.

After Crimson Peak, del Toro agreed to lead the filming of a remake of Fantastic Voyage, which would have been produced by the same James Cameron. Actually, work on the project was progressing, and the start of filming was scheduled for the end of 2017, but del Toro asked 20th Century Fox to give him time to enjoy the movie awards season. However, taking home the Oscar for The Shape of Water, the director did not return to work, but took a sabbatical for a whole year, and Fantastic Voyage was in limbo.

Other curious projects that del Toro noted include the pilot of the Hulk series, new versions of The Count of Monte Cristo and Beauty and the Beast. Moreover, the maker wanted to invite Emma Watson for the role in the last film, and, apparently, the Disney studio, which overtook WB and del Toro, appreciated the director's choice.
