A billion dollar journey to Middle-earth

Image In November last year, it became known that the online service Amazon had paid $ 250 million for the rights to create a series based on the works of J.R.R. Tolkien about Middle-earth. The Hollywood Reporter was able to find out new information about this high-profile deal.

Last December, it was reported that the management of the streaming giant could allocate a fantastic $ 750 million for the shooting of the series. According to new information, we are talking about an even more impressive amount. The series about Middle-earth has every chance of becoming the most expensive television project in history: Amazon bosses expect to film five seasons and are ready to spend more than $ 1 billion on their creation.

Representatives of the New Line Cinema company, which presented the world with the film series The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, also participated in negotiations over the rights to film the cult fantasy epic. As it became known to Hollywood insiders, the Amazon management managed to obtain permission from them to use some of the materials from these trilogies. Unfortunately, THR did not clarify whether they meant the right to show footage from Peter Jackson's films, or whether the streaming service will have access to the costumes, props and sets used in the work on The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.

At the moment, the streaming giant is also communicating with Jackson himself. Apparently, we are talking about the main expert on Middle-earth acting as a producer and consultant for the TV project.

Earlier it was reported that the multi-part drama will become a kind of prequel to The Fellowship of the Ring, but Amazon officials are in no hurry to share any additional information about its plot.

The terms of the deal oblige the Amazon management to launch the series in production in the next two years, and therefore fans of Tolkien's work can be sure that new details of this ambitious television project will not be long in coming.
