Born by Evolution. Review of New Era Z
“This is not the end. It's just that the world is no longer yours ”. The alien grace and rare charm of the flower of evil - Melanie ( Sennia Nanua ) - partly even reconciles with this sad fact, with childish spontaneity she voiced closer to the end of a fresh and extraordinary zombie drama " New Era Z "."There will be a lot of time", - she adds with a radiant smile of the supreme being, which she is. But this time is a personal gift of the mutant girl to the last representative of thehomo sapiensspecies, the beloved teacher of Miss Justino (Gemma Arterton). There was no time left for the rest. The history of mankind is over.There are a lot of films on this subject, mostly of high quality, nowadays. Korean "Train to Busan" is on its way, and its promising trailer can be seen in theaters just before watching Colm McCarthy's work .  " New Era Z " stands out a little against the background of an even zombie film process thanks to a solid literary basis. The book is praised for its quasi-scientific and mastery in describing children's psychological reactions (the author worked as a school teacher for 15 years). The same points can be included in the list of advantages of the film, since the script is the work of the father who created the original source. Although all the “science” in the film is forwarded, and, as usual, a lot of interesting and tasty details went to the basket because of the timing, this is exactly the film adaptation: quite accurate, neat, made with attention and care.  The world collapsed, the population of the Earth turned into the so-called "hungry" - typical running dead, hungry for living blood, but not rotting (their flesh is not dead), but covered with fungal formations of bizarre forms. At the military base "Hotel Echo" near London, a handful of scientists infected with hope - the last gift of Pandora - led by the masculine Doctor Caldwell (Glenn Close), are in search of a way to create a life-saving vaccine are subjecting children to sheer vivisection.  A junior researcher Helen Justino pretends to be a teacher and reads the myths of Ancient Greece, fixed in wheelchairs, to strange children, including the legend of Pandora, "gifted to all." Baby Melanie , the best student in the "class", becomes attached to Miss Justino , and a response, motherly feeling is born in that. Soon, under the onslaught of the "hungry", the base ceases to exist. Five heroes are waiting for a short but effective quest in search of the Headquarters. Of course, they will find something completely different.  When the author of a book is making a film adaptation of it, the result is as often disappointing as it is pleasing. A good writer is not necessarily a good screenwriter, and the author's personal "parental" interest sometimes does not benefit the project. Suffice it to recall the cases involving Stephen King's participation in filmmaking. Fortunately, Mike Carey's novel Pandora's Gifts turned out differently. Seams and gaps are visible, but still the script does not look like a ragged web over the void. Apparently, because Carey , among other things, is a comic book writer, and, accordingly, knows a thing or two about cinema. The cinematic merits of the tape are modest, but they are, and the creators scored a passing score in the struggle for the attention of the audience and the favor of critics with confidence and with interest. And Miss Nanua , Glenn Close and the music is unconditionally good. It seems that it was Cristobal Tapia de Veer who was appointed responsible for suspense in the project, and he coped with his task excellently.  Calling what is happening in the film a zombie apocalypse can only be from a selfish human point of view. Rather, we are witnessing a change in geological epochs, observing a zigzag of evolution in close-up. Who will they be, the new inhabitants of the Earth? The partial immunity against the terrible fungusCordyceps one-sided, acquired by Melanie and other representatives of the second generation, gives hope that the spread of the pathogen was only an evolutionary springboard, a reboot.  Thus, the non-obvious happy ending of " New Z Era " appears to be a colorful and compelling illustration of George Carlin's classic resume:"The planet is okay, this is the end of people.
