Review of the movie Gate of Darkness. New genre of cinema

Nicolas Cage's movies can no longer be judged individually. It's time to say that this is now a separate cinematic genre with its own rules and, to put it mildly, problems. As "The Gate of Darkness" proves once again, the genre is low-standard and designed for a very unbiased audience, which is easy to satisfy with a poorly thought-out story with flat characters and the absence of any subtext.

When asked why in such Oscar-winning movies are movieed, the answer is not so difficult to find. You can just look into Cage's eyes and see in them a colorless world of tiredness and sadness. They lost both charisma and almost all the talent, leaving room only for a numb expression and a parted mouth, annoying even more than Kristen Stewart's teeth. Cage seems to be trying, running with enthusiasm, cries, struggles with ghosts, but all this no longer looks natural, more like a school production of an unknown play, where aspiring actors demonstrate everything that they have been taught in a drama club during a year. It may be the fault of both the disorderly production and the absurd script, but the fact that Cage has long lost his tone does not give the movie any chances to unfold from the very beginning.

However, the `` Gate of Darkness '' at least curious. That is, the plot is laced with enough secrets to help you endure this spectacle almost painlessly. Even the very idea of a spirit taking children on Halloween as a form of tribute is interesting enough for the viewer to just fleetingly note the script's nonsense. The latter, by the way, are very many and they are so obvious that even a child will understand that something is wrong. The storylines do not fit well with each other, and the rules of the game (or what powers the spirit possesses) are never really explained, which allows the directors to think out the story on the go.

The visual language of the movie actively mixes the old and new horror techniques while managing to simultaneously reproduce awkwardly “ Shining ” and “ Sinister ”. Uli Edel is really far from Stanley Kubrick, and not even Scott Derrickson, so all the poignant moments fly like a comet over the earth, in passing maintaining interest in other events. Rather, mythology fascinates. Lovers of ancient symbols, legends and horror stories will have something to sink their teeth into after watching. Cage's presence even reminds of "Treasures of the Nation", the third part of which is unlikely to ever be published, so it can be considered “ Gate of Darkness ” such a mystical conclusion of the Disney franchise.

The cast includes Sarah Wayne Callis (`` The Walking Dead ''), who nevertheless, more than the others, does not fit into the setting of the movie and, against the background of Cage, looks like a first-class actress: alive, sensitive, realistic. Unlike Cage, she is comfortable in the simple scenery of an ordinary horror movie, perhaps because Cage is only getting used to low-budget movies, and she has long been accustomed to it.

“ Gate of Darkness ” - another case when the main emotional anchor of the movie is – child – terribly annoying with his dull appearance, the police and the arriving medium are not able to help and only stretch the movie, and some blind tramp from the nearest gateway provides incomparably great help. There is no proper answer to questions, to riddles – direct explanation, and the world of spirits never really comes to ours, despite all the promises.

Thus, the `` Gate of Darkness '' - this is not a horror or a drama, not an adventure or a family movie, not an animal or a bird, but something in between, one-sided, crumbly and stupid. Whatever one may say, a new genre of cinema. Even Cage is somehow not at all sorry. After all, he is still called to good projects: “ The Croods ”, “ Snowden ” will serve as an example. This means that it is not a necessity, but a choice to be movieed in the `` Gates of Darkness '', a choice that proves its failure again and again.
