Nicknamed the Beast. Review Split

Image Billy Milligan is a schizophrenic with twenty-four personalities living inside him, ideal material for Hollywood thriller makers. In March 2015, information appeared in the news that DiCaprio himself was preparing to play many roles in one film. However, while the movie about Billy Milligan is stalled, M. Night Shyamalan did not hesitate and shot his own variation on the theme. The main role in his film went to the charismatic Scotsman James McAvoy .

In the middle of the day, an unknown person kidnaps three teenage girls from a busy parking lot in front of a hypermarket. He puts them to sleep, and when the girlfriends come to their senses, they find themselves locked in a room with no windows and with one door. From time to time, the door opens, and different guests visit the girls: now a nine-year-old boy, now a calm and reasonable lady, now a hot-tempered young man. Most of all, the prisoners are afraid of the fact that all these visitors are individuals who hide inside one schizophrenic person. There are 23 of them in total. True, the person who kidnapped them informs the girls that the 24th is coming - the pinnacle of evolution. Someone Beast ...

M. Night Shyamalan after the hits “The Sixth Sense”, “Invincible” and “Mysterious Forest” for several years was seduced by films with a lot of zeros in the “budget” column. As a result - absurdities like "The Lord of the Elements". In Split , the director chooses a story with a minimum budget (the film cost the creators only $ 9 million), but with a maximum of artistic techniques.

Building the image and story of the protagonist, the director uses a kind of mirror effect: in the overwhelming majority of scenes, the protagonist is demonstrated through interaction with other characters. Due to the fact that different schizophrenic personalities communicate with different people, the disclosure of the hero's versatility and the ambiguity of the current situation is achieved. Shyamalan and does not think to hide something from the viewer, he turns the key character into a simple or completely understandable. The director gives out information in a dosed manner, moreover, he periodically shows the circumstances from different angles. The spectator is seated on the jury and informed that after the trial, a sacrifice is planned. It will certainly happen, but who exactly will fall on the altar is an open question. The entire film is based on the principle of determining whether who is destined to soon appear before the Almighty. Moreover, the option is not ruled out in which to be under the sacrificial knife is a blessing, not a curse.

The depth of the protagonist's elaboration is also increased due to the way the director introduces the female prisoners and the woman psychiatrist with the protagonist to the viewer. Demonstrating certain skills and memories of each of them, Shyamalan leads the viewer to the fact that he willy-nilly begins to compare the line of the key character with the minor ones. The reception is as old as the world, but the director knows perfectly well what he is doing. As a herd of wolves surrounds the victim and slowly narrows the circle, so he, being distracted by other people's stories, invariably leads us to the central image. At the end of the film, the director kills two birds with one stone. First, it ends the story exactly where it needs to be finished. Answers some questions, but leaves no time to ask others. Secondly, he makes it clear where he intends to move next. If not in the next movie, then in one of them for sure. In any case, Shyamalan himself said in an interview that Split will definitely have a sequel. Conditional or direct, time will tell.

After James McAvoy got the main role, the media immediately began to predict his benefit in this film. They were right: the actor shines with many facets of his talent. His reincarnations are so unexpected, and he looks so organic in each of the images that this game will conquer any skeptical viewer. Betty Buckley should be separately noted as the main character's psychiatrist. The veteran actress is in excellent shape and has once again proved her professionalism.

Summing up, we can make an unambiguous conclusion about the status of M. Night Shyamalan today. The series "Wayward Pines" gave hope for the director's return from the lingering creative oblivion. The year before last was marked by the release of his strong horror "Visit", in which the director skillfully played the genre of mockumentari. Split leaves no questions at all - Shyamalan has returned completely and is in excellent creative shape.
