Live. Review of ”Manchester by the Sea”

Image "Manchester by the sea" - this is the case when after watching you want to be silent and twirl in your head only"Well, how is that ?!"and"Thank you"< / i>. The movie preview seemed to promise a simple healing drama: burdened by the events of the past, the reclusive plumber Lee must become the guardian of his nephew after his brother's death, and therefore returns to his hometown. The viewer, fed up with pictures about the responsibility and value of family ties, has the right to assume that in this tape with a modest budget and two Oscars something similar and rather predictable awaits him. Moreover, it is so American - not to give up, to inspire, to work on oneself."But no, everything is much more complicated", - thought director Kenneth Lonergan , I reread Chekhov and made a film based on my own script, the reality of which combines trauma with tranquility, and the plot develops contrary to templates and is too similar to life. Only, please, someone else's.

True, it will not be possible to abstract from the experiences of Casey Affleck's hero: get ready for more than two hours to become him - melancholic, devastated, sometimes rude Lee Chandler . A person who has made a mistake for which it is impossible to pay with either life or righteous behavior.

The atmosphere of the film is like a pastoral, full of quiet sadness and light at the same time. And in this the melancholic picture of Lonergan breaks the mold again: despite the pain, which, most likely, will stupidly drill your heart for a long time, Manchester by the Sea makes you wish not to die from despair, but to live on. Yes, with the pain that will only dim over time, but live. The main character will have to do this too.

Manchester by the Sea is a rather cinematic place. It is a coastal small town in Massachusetts with a population of just over five thousand. Life there flows measuredly and flies by unnoticed, and hands are constantly freezing from the ocean winds. This is a whole microcosm with its own small universes - families, couples and companies, where everyone knows each other. It would seem that nothing outstanding or worthwhile can happen here. It's easy to sleep in such places and then save yourself with religion. After watching, it even begins to seem that Manchester-by-the-sea is nothing more than a state of mind - sensitive and fragile. Here nature has created a special kind of people - Stoics stingy with emotions. Not only because it is a pity to share with someone, but because it is almost impossible to express your feelings at the right moment.

The story invented by Kenneth , combining everyday life with tragedy, I think, against the USA background, would have acquired completely different shades - it would have poured out into blackness or, even worse, into an educational poster. Fortunately, neither the one nor the other happened to the painting of Lonergan : he presented the world with everyday existential drama, where delicacy, emotions in halftones and psychologism are hidden. What strikes the most about "Manchester" is the combination of a down-to-earth, absolutely uncomplicated existence with a tragedy of such a level that even ancient Greek playwrights would envy.

That is why here motives of church chants are combined with the works of Handel, and the famous " Adagio Albinoni " by Remo Giazzotto speaks in musical language that instantly pins the viewer to the wall. This is how the mechanism of true cinematography is triggered over and over again in Manchester . Not with the help of direct remarks or wringing hands, but when depicting a family fishing in the cold waters of the Atlantic - an idyllic scene, after which, it would seem, nothing out of the ordinary can happen. And it happens.

It seems to be waiting for that - when you give up the slack, you do not listen to yourself, you forget that happiness can end in a moment. And life is not against you, it just goes on: someone dies, someone is born, and someone still cannot retire with their girlfriend to just get warmer. Meanwhile, life gradually diminishes the scale of the tragedy, erases sharp corners, but leaves scars forever. Nothing other than fate, an evil fate, hung over the once carefree Lee Chandler , and only by his behavior can one understand where we have the present, and where the forever lost past, an un-idealized likeness of Eden.

Unfortunately, the most important thing cannot be erased from memory: we get to know the past of Lee through scattered flashbacks, already by the middle of the film unwinding a tangle of old events. And if the first part of the picture, where the strange hero behaves like an embittered loser, evokes a reaction:What is wrong with you, man?, then the second turns all imaginable questions into one emotion. The new knowledge puts everything in its place, forcing to look at the life of Lee from a completely unexpected angle. Playing at some transcendental level Casey Affleck wants to not only pay tribute by congratulating him on the well-deserved Oscar , but also just shake hands. In an interesting way, this picture of the possible salvation through the family and of the family as a separate universe is fanned by the joy of kinship.

And if the viewer guessed about the talent of Casey or Michelle Williams without nominations for prestigious awards, then the very young Lucas Hedges - the opening of the tape Lonergan . An innocent, not yet fledged soul, eager to enter the adult world - just such a character should have caused a desire to quietly help and support. Every hero from provincial Manchester has a history of this or that trauma, and each of them has their own medicines, their own chances of recovery. However, despite the fact that life triumphs again and again, there are no life savers - total sadness will never leave the culprit of the tragedy. There is only an option to sensibly assess your capabilities and not be lost for someone who still has to go through their own winding road. For his sake, learn to live with a heart forever broken into fragments.
