Children in the Cage: Review of the Warrior by Gavin O'Connor

Image Gavin O'Connor's film Warrior, which is classified as a sports drama, is actually not so much a sports drama as it is. Ideal for pair viewing. In this case, sport acts as a tool with which old abscesses on three male souls are opened.

Father, Paddy Conlon (Nick Nolte), a former Marine and a former alcoholic, is trying to regain the respect of the "kids", which he lost, being at the mercy of the green serpent. One son, Tommy (Tom Hardy), a former Marine and deserter, is trying to provide money for the family of his friend who died in the war. The second son, Brendan (Joel Edgerton), is a physics teacher who urgently needs to give a lot of money to the bank. All three are former fighters, including the famous "Octagon". Their stories are woven into one tight ball of grievances, claims, ambition and pride, weaknesses and true brotherly love.

ImageGet ready for the first half of the movie to be a little boring, especially if You are not close to the problems of Alcoholics Anonymous with a long period of sobriety, or the problems of post-traumatic stress syndrome of a warrior who has gone down by his own country. Nick Nolte, about whom we all know what he is capable of, at the beginning of the picture appears before us at all. His hero carefully counts the days of his sobriety, but his sobriety, as it happened, is not needed by anyone, even himself. From this he somehow deflated and shriveled all over.

Tom Conlon: Women haven't been here for a long time, as I can see ...
Paddy Conlon: I don't need women anymore, Tommy.
Tom Conlon: Yeah, it's probably hard to find a girl who can take a punch right now.

ImageAbout the details of the injury Tommy the viewer will learn far not right away, so at first Tom Hardy (and when did he manage to pump himself up like that?) looks like a complete scumbag who only does what he throws, but hears no one except himself. Spits poison and sparkles with a dull eye. Brendan in his teacher's incarnation is very attractive and American-style plausible, but his further attempts to swagger seem almost pathetic. But when these three heroes and three stories are connected at one point, the boring drama literally in a couple of frames turns into an enchanting spectacle.

Paddy spits on his sobriety, gorges himself on rags and rushes around the room with a purple face, shouting curses. Tommy suddenly turns out to be a tenderly loving son - attentively, the scene of putting his father, exhausted by drunkenness, on the bed can cause uncontrollable sobs from viewers of both sexes - and then a loving brother. Andteacher Brendan (not without a couple of affectionate ones from the coach), having lost half of his face, gains a whole victory and reconciliation with his brother.

Brendan: I dislocated his shoulder.
Coach: Relax. Breathe.
Brendan: I heard it crack.
Coach: Did you dislocate his shoulder? Good. I want you to go and twist his second.

The final shots tell us that Paddy now has something to sober up for, let him celebrate the victory and return to meetings with his anonymous friends. Thus, two catharsis - in the relationship between brothers and the sport itself - are superimposed on each other, and the effect of viewing is unexpectedly powerful.

If we compare "Warrior" with "Fighter", then for the first one, of course, "Oscar" is not required, a couple of less prestigious awards are enough. But if you liked The Fighter - Warrior , you must watch it. And you know, Tom Hardy here with such frenzy kneads his opponents, drags them around the"cage"like rag dolls, that the desire to look at the dough of this gopovy bashibuzuk with a legend becomes simply intolerable.

I should probably say a few words about Jennifer Morrison's performance as the wife of a physics teacher and a desperate family man Brendan ... But there is nothing special to say - any of the actresses of House could play such a role , but somehow Jennifer did not succeed in highlighting her heroine or giving her individuality.

PS For a full-fledged catharsis, it is better to watch the trailer for "Warrior" after the movie.
