Micro-migration. Review of the film ”In short”

Image As one of the most stable creators of modern American indie cinema, Alexander Payne has long taught the public that as soon as he announces the name of his new film, he instantly appears on the Oscar shortlist. Payne's quiet and compact utterances are indeed held in high esteem by film academics. It is all the more surprising that his fresh statement turned out to be out of the ordinary - much louder and more sweeping.

When the issue of overpopulation of the planet, which previously seemed a distant and unconvincing horror story, begins to acquire quite clear prospects for an ecological catastrophe, the best scientists from all over the world begin to look for solutions that will save humanity. The representatives of Norway are more successful in this direction, suggesting an unexpected escape route - reducing people by 14 times using a special intricate procedure and placing them in a kind of micro-space that looks like a miniature park. Traumatologist Paul Safranek, missing the stars from the sky in the world of big people, and his wife Audrey, whose dreams never fit into a box called "reality", agree to equal the size of an elephant beetle and, finally, heal at ease. But at the stage of preparation for the procedure, Audrey suddenly backtracks,

Imagine that during a celebration, one of the guests volunteers to say a toast and begins to cheerfully give out a seed for an anecdote. However, then the tonality of his speech changes dramatically, and now you are already listening to a mournful and hopeless story, from which the spectrum of perceived colors narrows to all shades of gray. And then, before reaching the final, the speaker returns to the place of the anecdote at which he left off.

It is precisely such an unassembled, confused and confused storyteller who appears in the film "In short" Alexander Payne. Maybe this is the reason for the unprecedented budget of 68 million dollars for the director, which could serve as a weighty temptation to embrace the immensity, but Payne's signature solid storytelling style has disappeared somewhere, giving way to a digest of theses - important on paper, but flatly embodied on the screen.

ImageIn order to once again express thoughts that Eldorado is not exists, and any breakthrough peaceful invention can easily be used in the service of evil (one of the main characters of the picture, the Vietnamese dissident Ngoc Lan Tran, was punished for speaking out against the totalitarian government), it is not at all necessary to resort to technical kunshtuk, which was repeatedly skated on family comedies ...

As for the protagonist of "In short", he seems to correspond to the standard Payne type of a simpleton from the middle class, who at the right moments all falls out of hand. But, unlike, say, Warren Schmidt from "About Schmidt" or Woodrow T. Grant from "Nebraska", Paul Safranek performed by Matt Damon absolutely does not arouse sympathy, rather annoying with his total spinelessness. And even at the moment of making the final fateful decision, Safranek looks not a hero, but a weakling.

Accordingly, there is no reason to expect a suitable romantic line between the characters of Damon and Hong Chau either. Instead of touching and sensuality in their joint scenes, awkwardness and even a certain caricature come to the fore.

Although Shorter is destined to be a major failure in Alexander Payne's filmography (both commercial and reputational), the two-time Oscar winner still deserves to have at least one friendly poodle among greyhounds and Dobermans in the pack of dogs launched on him from everywhere. ... After all, you must admit that not every successful director, whose career has long been going on a knurled one, will decide on such a bold creative experiment. But in the future, of course, it will be better that the producers working with Payne do not go into the pockets of their winter jackets with him and do not extract the extra tens of millions of dollars from there.
