About the USAn generation X. Review of the film ”Success”

Image She is P.J. Harvey, he is Kurt Cobain. Once, while still strangers, they sang The Cure for a drunken company of passers-by and decided to create their own group. They wanted to become punk rockers and collect concerts in America. She wrote lyrics and played guitar, and he played drums. Their apartment was covered with posters of Hendrix, Morrison, Nirvana and Talking Heads. Success awaited them, but she was expecting a child ...

Liza (Yulia Snigir) and Artem (Roman Kurtsyn) are not quite ordinary parents. They can joke insolently and will definitely not be scolded for not doing homework or experimenting with their appearance. But their daughter Vita (Maria Lobanova) does not need excessive parental control and guardianship. Although Vita is a teenager, in many ways she is more mature than her parents. It is she who calms Lisa when she comes to her to share that she wants to find herself. Vita supports her mother, although she doesn't understand: how is it to find yourself? Later, she will console Artyom's dad when Lisa leaves the family to realize her dreams of a musical career, which were extinguished with the advent of an unplanned child. It happens by chance that the famous Yuri Talisman (Alexey Chadov) will take them under his production wing, and they will play "punk-rock-chanson", singing in our own way the song of Igor Nikolaev "Let's drink to love", prompted by the "genetic memory of the USA". Their poor repertoire will also include a magic song, thanks to which Vita will try to return her mother.

Interestingly, in honor of forty years since the release of the film "Kramer vs. Kramer", directors and screenwriters from all over the world, apparently, decided to exploit the famous Oscar-winning plot. Noah Baumback directed The Marriage Story with Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver, which was nominated for the Golden Lion. Ruminov released "Success", where the USA Kurt Cobain has to take care of the child on his own, like the hero of Dustin Hoffman. And early next year Ice 2 will be released with Alexander Petrov as a single father. Ruminov's new film is a real cute fairy tale, which is characterized by artistic convention. In it, much is omitted or shown only for formality.

In a sense, "Success" can be called an alternative version of "La La Landa", which fantasizes about what would happen if the main characters did have a child. The conventionality of the story is leveled by weightless dialogues and gentle, captivating intonation. As in the most frank and most author's film by Ruminov, The Love Machine, the essence remains somewhere outside, while the words hang in the neon air. Conversations and speech as such do not make much sense, because unlike music, they do not have magic. Not music, but its idea becomes salutary. It is only strange that the film about musicians had almost no music, as well as punk-rock: the heroes cannot decide whether they are for rock and roll, or for a heavier sound. But there was a bohemian lifestyle, broken guitars and so many covers of Let's Drink to Love, that after watching I really want to take a glass.

Ruminov shoots with the same degree of lightness and irony as Viktor Shamirov and Roman Karimov do, but without the indie angle. Therefore, the parallel is built with more commercial stories than with arthouse films, which the director still tried to focus on. Already after finishing work on "Success" Ruminov shared on social networks that he had to fight with the producers, who severely cut the tape:“My movie cannot be improved by cutting and squeezing it for the sake of sessions. It's the producer's honor to help the author find the voice, not suppress and format it. You are producers, creators, not destroyers, not formatters, people who customize talent to fit your personal format ”.

According to Ruminov, the "Jedi of Rock 'n' Roll" really fell victim to the Sith producers. Lightness and weightlessness sometimes seem fictitious and insincere due to the cut-off of the conventional history. In "Machine of Love," Ruminov, who plays himself, said that he did not want to sit and watch a film where each gluing is measured to please the viewer. He wanted to watch live movies. Therefore, he would hardly have cited his new job as an example.
