DC Bug Fixes: Wonder Woman Review

Image Apparently, Warner Bros. management has read a variety of motivators. Like, it was not possible to film the comics DC the first time, it will turn out every tenth, and stuff like that. Apparently, trying to think about the pleasant (the box office of "Suicide Squad" and "Batman v Superman"), and not about the sad (criticism of the same films), the studio released a solo tape about the Amazon princess Diana Prince known worldwide as Wonder Woman .

Diana was born and lived on the island of Themiscira, located in the ocean, far from trade and tourist routes. From the very childhood she was taught to fight - they prepared her to meet the god of war Ares , who is the mission of all the Amazons to kill. By chance, a British spy Steve Trevor appears on the island, who tells Diana about the bloody war going on throughout the world. Wonder Woman thinks all this is Ares and decides to travel with Steve to deal with the Old God ...

She directed Wonder Woman Patty Jenkins , who released the wonderful crime drama Monster with Charlize Theron in 2003, and after that successfully worked in the television sector. Gal Gadot and Chris Pine played the main roles in the film adaptation of the comic. Danny Houston, David Thewlis, Robin Wright, Ewan Bremner and Connie Nielsen were in the background.

Even before its release, "Wonder Woman" was overgrown with many assumptions. Someone believed that the story about the girl from Themiscira would be an ode to feminism. Others, mainly producers, hoped that the new tape would satisfy critics who already had a certain attitude towards Warner Bros. projects based on DC comics. Well, someone was just counting on Linda Carter's cameo - she played the role of Wonder Woman in the 70s TV series of the same name.

From the very first shots of a new picture, it becomes clear that a woman is at the helm of the project. A male director would not miss the chance to periodically focus on the main character's forms. Jenkins always remembers that he removes the tape not about the hips and bust, but about the character as a whole. The directordoesn't wanthis heroine, but he really respects and sometimes admires her, and this attitude is transmitted from the screen to the viewer.

As for gender equality or even female superiority, it is shown here very subtly. There is no primitive elevation of the hero at the expense of belittling those around him. Diana easily scatters male opponents, but it makes no sense to single out superiority in terms of gender in these scenes - only the superiority of a demigoddess over mortals. The film contains subtle attacks on the stronger sex like the phrase "For a woman's pleasure, a man is not necessary." But firstly, it's cute, and secondly, given the context in which it's said, it's quite funny. Also Prince is accompanied by four men, from whom there is more moral support than physical support, but this was done to show through communication with them that the great warrior is also a lady of a fine mental organization.

Advantageously, Wonder Woman is distinguished from previous adaptations of DC by humor. Not that humor, in which there is hopelessness (keep in mind the bitter jokes of the butler Alfred in Batman v Superman ) or rudeness, but solid, subtle and light. The authors joke about gender relations, and about sexism in Britain at the beginning of the twentieth century, and about the place of a woman next to a man, and about naked Chris Pine in the jacuzzi of the Amazons. There is a lot of humor, but it is always in place: Jenkins does not allow the film to resemble the products of Marvel .

Just as 50 years ago no project was complete without a chase, so now no blockbuster is complete without action. The director showed that she had studied the experience of previous adaptations well. In the same "Man of Steel", the stake was placed on action, and, concentrating on it, the authors did not really reveal the protagonist. In Wonder Woman , the action is metered out and is located exactly where it is necessary according to the logic of the plot. There are no sudden battles for twenty minutes here. In the film, even every action scene carries a certain subtext and adds a brick to the heroine's story arc.

Another significant advantage of the fantastic action movie was the confidence of the title character. In Man of Steel , the protagonist was tormented by the question of whether to choose Earth or Krypton. In Batman v Superman , the heroes could not agree on how severe punishment the criminals deserve: one shook his finger, the other lynched. Diana is so confident in her innocence that even such a realist to the bone as Steve Trevor begins to believe in the tricks of Ares at one point. On the one hand, it sometimes comes out sideways to Diana herself, on the other hand, willy-nilly you start to envy her conviction.

In general, all this confidence, apparently, went to the heroine from the filmmakers, because on the fragile shoulders of Patty Jenkins lay a whole mountain of challenges. A full-length film about Diana has been tried for more than a dozen years. The previous adaptation of the superhero comic book, Elektra, was unsuccessful. The blockbuster has a budget of $ 150 million, the largest amount ever awarded to a female director. There were more than enough obstacles on the way of the project to the screens, and the filmmakers not only overcame them all, but also produced a result for which neither fans nor critics are ashamed.

Of course, not everything in the new film is perfect. Gal Gadot , a first-class model, is much better at dealing with action scenes and duos than with close-ups. Her set of identical facial expressions towards the end of the tape begins to pall. In addition, Zack Snyder's favorite slow-mo, which he inserts into each of his films, and in the film Jenkins appears regularly, although most directors played enough with this technique back in the 2000s. From the storylines of the characters, the Diana and Trevor arcs turned out best of all, all the rest are rather sketchy. As for the villains, they seem to have migrated from the pictures about the most famous British agent - created according to all the laws of Bond. However, all of the above is not the most important requirements for blockbsters,

Now DC bosses can confidently say that a worthy competitor to Marvel film production has emerged from under their wing. True, ahead of the "Justice League", where, in addition to the many characters, also the directors changed during the filming. But if the producers apply the same formula they used to create Wonder Woman , the chances of success for the sequel to the MCU DC will be significantly higher.
