Life coaching from Johnny Depp. Review of the film ”Breaking Bad”

Image Johnny Depp is clearly going through hard times. The charges of domestic violence brought against Depp's ex-wife Amber Heard significantly damaged his reputation, as did the public condemnation of the actor's possible alcohol and drug addiction. Now, in every interview, Depp has to make excuses and assure him that abuse is unacceptable for him, and that he does not suffer from dependence on prohibited substances. The ugly situation was reflected in the career of the actor. His last striking work can be considered the role of Grindelwald in "Fantastic Beasts", against which the recent paintings with Depp's participation look too faded. I would like to say that he simply does not receive decent offers due to a long-running scandal, but this is not entirely true. This year, for example, "Waiting for the Barbarians," starring Depp, won a prize in Venice and was even nominated for the Golden Lion. However, Breaking Bad is not a festival story at all. And although the film clumsily fits into Depp's rich filmography, it fits very well with the current position of the actor.

In the film, Depp plays the professor of literature, Richard, who learns about an incurable disease - his lungs are affected by a cancerous tumor, although he never smoked cigarettes. He only has a few months to live. However, upon returning home, Richard learns no less shocking news that makes him reconsider his views on life. It turns out that his wife is cheating on him with the nasty dean of the college where he teaches. As educated adults who prefer to solve problems not by argument, but by discussion, they agree to give each other freedom to get a taste of free life. And here it is assumed that Richard should break away, but his petty hooliganism can hardly be called that ...

The slogan of the film reads: "The main rule is no rules." And Richard really breaks many taboos and allows himself what he could not afford before. Most of them, of course, are about various kinds of pleasures. But, in addition to changes in his personal life, the professor carries out a mini-revolution within the walls of the college and expels from his literary seminar everyone who came exclusively for an assessment, and also for the sake of humor of unstable students in breeches and crocs. Richard invites the remaining daredevils to disassemble the great American novels and get the essence out of them. However, the professor is more a parody of the disgraced but outstanding teacher John Keating of the Dead Poets Society, rather than following his example in teaching. Keating, played by Robin Williams, teaches students not to be afraid of eccentricity. look at literary works and life itself from different angles, and also seize the moment - carpe diem. He breaks the rules that fetter the spirit and consciousness of students, and Richard is simply naughty in spite of the dean, the system, the unfaithful wife and illness. Interestingly, according to the original script of the Dead Poets Society, Keating was also terminally ill with cancer. However, they decided to abandon this plot move in order to pay more attention to the students and their formation. Director Wayne Roberts, on the other hand, did not want to deprive the story of the drama.

At the exit, this very drama turns out to be somehow fake. Here is Richard, surrounded by students, sitting in a bar, making a pretentious toast about the fearlessness and uniqueness of everyone, and then goes to the restroom with the waitress having her eyes on him. But the professor, in painful shudders, directs his gaze to the sky, hears the ringing of bells and instantly realizes that he wants to visit church. The viewer inevitably arises a question: is this a post-irony? If only.

There are a lot of films about terminally ill people who change drastically before their death or decide to live to the fullest. "Knockin 'on Heaven" fell in love with the audience with a pleasant cinematic sentimentality, and "Dallas Buyers Club" - with a direct and frank intonation. Last year, a wonderful film by Natasha Merkulova and Alexei Chupov, "The Man Who Surprised Everyone," in which the hero Yevgeny Tsyganova decides to deceive impending death, was released on USA screens. Professor Richard is still very far from such a change and such courage. Depp has to go all out in order to somehow put together a boring image of the professor and at the same time fit into the Procrustean bed of the plot. The film clumsily balances between drama and comedy, not knowing where to sit back.

At the seminar, the professor asks to analyze Moby Dick and other complex classical texts. He judges students' performances and concepts severely. At the same time, his own reflections on life are more reminiscent of the teachings of Tony Robbins, but in no way an intellectual teacher. Richard feeds on the life-giving energy of students, but he has nothing to give in return. In theory, the professor should inspire and energize, but, as he himself correctly noted in a conversation with a student, apathy prevails.

By and large, Breaking Bad is a passing film in Depp's career, but for an actor, it is paradoxically important work. In it, Depp reminds the viewer that, in fact, he has always been a bully, and also informs about the difficulties that he recently had to face, about the need to reshape his life and put together an intelligible narrative out of it. It remains to be hoped that Depp knows how to return the status quo and leave for the still unexplored creative spaces.
