Without slowing down. Review of ”Baby Drive”

Image Science fiction, comic book and popular video game festivals are consistently popular with cosplay fans. However, this year, the organizers of the 18th annual international convention "Starcon" did not leave bored those visitors who do not spend hundreds of hours, meters of fabric and sacks of accessories on making costumes of their favorite heroes incredibly similar to the original. To some extent, these people remained observers, but only in a different capacity - as moviegoers.

The long-awaited film by the British hooligan Edgar Wright , who this time shamelessly climbed into the territory of Guy Ritchie and settled well on it, was exclusively shown at the Starkon 2017 held in St. Petersburg, turning, in fact, the usual youth romantic cinema into an ebullient, noisy and bright mixture of "Fast and the Furious" and "Scott Pilgrim". The organizers of the festival did not fail - the visually stylish film, full of hit music and daring youthful maximalism, " Baby on the Drive " is ideal for a debut in the "Starcon" format. Perhaps that is why every screeching of tires on the asphalt, every beautiful long camera span, every idiotic trick of the protagonist was perceived by the audience with sincere enthusiasm and a storm of applause. There was a rare case of complete coincidence of a character with an audience - just as young,

His name is Kid . He feels best when driving a car. He also had an accident as a child and has had constant ringing in his ears ever since. This ringing Kid drowns out music in headphones for many years. He is so used to his player that his whole life and even his movements depend on music tracks. It doesn't matter if he's hiding from the police after a bank robbery or carrying coffee to someone. But one day he accidentally meets the girl Deborah . This acquaintance changes everything - Kid decides to end a life full of chases and robberies. However, fate in the face of the tycoons of the criminal world has their own plans for a gifted racer ...

Wrote and directed Baby on a Drive by the wonderful Briton Edgar Wright, who includes such hits as "Zombie named Sean" and "Armageddian". Ansel Elgort, Kevin Spacey, Jon Hamm, Lily James and Jamie Foxx starred in his new film.

From the very first scene, Wright makes it clear that it will be hot. Bank robbery, evasion of pursuit, subtle advertising of Subaru's agility and dynamic music - this is how the director rivets the viewer to the screen from the very beginning. This is followed by absolutely amazing credits, during which Kid , dancing, carries four cups of coffee from the cafe to the gathering place of accomplices. True, as practice shows, often films that start very impressively quickly sink to a boring repetition of what has already been seen many, many times ...

Wright does not even think to slow down. As for the sore cliches, he put his entire attitude towards them into the mouth of the hero Kevin Spacey :“I don't need to say platitudes like“ I’ll kill anyone close to you if you refuse ”; , right? ”. Wright plays up a lot of cliches in this way. For example, a movie about a chase doesn't end with a chase, as one might expect. Or music. She, as a rule, acts only as an aid for the video sequence. Immediately, the director turns the situation 180 degrees - even the robbery begins after the demonstrative selection of the desired track on the player. The same approach Wright used when creating characters - each of them in fact turns out to be very far from the original impression. And such an eye-catching, untrained directorial finds - a whole film.

Music in "Little Boy on a Drive" is not just a background, but a full-fledged participant in all events. The selection of compositions should be noted separately. Explosive, melodic and shrill tracks from Beach Boys, Damned, Blur, T-Rex change faster than pistol magazines. The culmination of musical enjoyment is 'Brighton Rock' performed by the immortal Freddie Mercury. And the director demonstrated his ability to masterfully weave music into video even in the funny geek-contest "Scott Pilgrim Against All".

Despite the presence in the cast of such luminaries of the screen as Kevin Spacey, Jamie Foxx and Johnny Hamm, Ansel Elgort shamelessly and charmingly steals every scene with his participation from senior colleagues. Although he is already an accomplished personality (participation in "Divergent" and "Fault in the Stars" did not go unnoticed), the role of Kid is definitely his role. It is felt that the actor himself is delighted with the image invented by Wright , and Wright only made sure that the camera kept up with Kid . It doesn't matter if he dances to court his guardian, or plays cat and mouse with a dozen cops chasing him. While one was pressing the pedal, the other was pressing the "record" button. And it all looks very harmonious on the screen. There is no imbalance even at high speeds.

As for the plot, here Wright also frolicked in plenty. The reference to Scott Pilgrim is unambiguously read: the young man confronts serious opponents in order to reunite with his lady of the heart. And the combination of mortal danger with amazing humor is almost the main distinguishing feature of all Wright's paintings. The director also abandoned the traditional step-by-step reproduction of a love story. He does not need this - in the looks of Ansel Elgort and Lily James there is much more warmth and tenderness than long scenes of dates and walks could contain.

Baby on a Drive is not Fast & Furious, not Carrier, and not Drive. This is Edgar Wright , who once again confirmed his role as a sophisticated bully from the world of cinema. Unlike Tarantino, who dissects a separate genre with each tape, Wright never shoots Hitler in a movie theater. He simply shows everything that has already happened, but from a new angle. And it does not go beyond the genre. This time, he decided to speak on the topic of films that take place at high speeds and stylish music. He spoke the way only he can speak. Such hooligans should be protected and cherished, and not removed from the post of director of "Ant-Man". Wright not only knows his business very well, but also loves it very much - it is always felt. In an era when everyone takes pictures for money that kind of sincerity captivates most of all. And, unlike most chase and robbery films, Baby on the Drive will be watched more than once. And this is the best recognition of the talent of the people who had a hand in its creation.
