A fragile throne dominant. Review of ”Fatal Temptation”

Image The language of cinema is developing non-stop. And if the laws according to which blockbusters are shot have not undergone any special changes over the past twenty years, then it is much more interesting to watch the festival works. Every year there are pictures that do not entertain their viewers, but make them think and debate. One of them was Sofia Coppola's new film Fatal Temptation .

1864. The height of the American Civil War. The Virginia girls' boarding house (southerner side) is supervised by Mrs Martha Farnsworth . Every day the girls learn lessons and grow vegetables in their small garden. One day one of the pupils of the boarding house goes to the forest for mushrooms. There she bumps into a wounded corporal from the northerners. Sympathy overcame hostility to the enemy, and the girl helped the soldier to get to the boarding house, where, under the supervision of Mrs. Farnsworth , his return to life began. However, the healthier he got, the more he began to tempt the pupils of the boarding house and Mrs. Farnsworth herself ...

Staged "Fatal Temptation" by Sofia Coppola , known for the films "Lost in Translation" and "Somewhere". Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst and Elle Fanning went to the main roles. The image of the "fatal tempter" was embodied by Colin Farrell.

"Fatal Temptation" is a remake of the film "Deceived", in which Clint Eastwood himself played the main role. And already at the casting stage, it became clear that Coppola was going to tell the same story in a completely different way. When Eastwood landed a role in the original film, he was already an accomplished western hero - a winner in life and in movies. Colin Farrell doesn't have such unambiguous characters, and his character is not so die-hard. And the director used this distinction to create a completely different protagonist who found himself in a similar situation.

Coppola plays with dominance throughout the tape. The opposition "strong woman - wounded man" is quickly replaced by "a charming man - an inexperienced woman", and this castling is repeated several more times throughout the film. The director makes it clear to the viewer how fragile the throne of the master of the situation is, especially if you give vent to feelings. And one author's statement on the topic of how to become a dominant in a relationship would already have been enough to make the film relevant and topical, but Coppola goes even further. At one point, she switches from the external opposition (between the characters) to the internal (in the soul of each of the characters). A kind of snag is needed to add psychological tension and bring an element of surprise to the picture. The sophisticated viewer demands more every year, therefore, unpredictability is one way to raise the bar a little higher. And Coppola in this regard has always managed to pleasantly surprise (with the exception, perhaps, of the "Elite Society").

But if the change of the dominant in the frame is the form of the film, then the feelings and emotions of the characters are its plot-forming content. One glass mixes a cocktail of empathy, sympathy, sexual attraction, jealousy, affection, hatred and indifference. However, Coppola prevents this set of ingredients from becoming atonal something. She always knows what emotion to draw from the artists, what kind of reaction to expect from the viewer. The canon "action-reaction" in its absolute meaning bears fruit both during viewing and after its completion. There is no one indifferent in the hall.

Adds intrigue to the picture and a veil of mystery with which Coppola surrounds its main character. If the viewer sees the life and everyday life of girls with his own eyes at the very beginning, then the story of the hero Farrell we learn solely from his words. And as the story progresses, there is more and more ambiguity in his words and actions. In the original tape, the story of Eastwood was shown through flashbacks. She was not very pleasant, but still she was. There is complete uncertainty here, which excites much more.

If we talk about the social subtext of the picture, then Coppola is more than unambiguous. The director passes judgment on female friendship when a strong man appears nearby who needs to be taken care of. With cruel irony, she goes through a hypocritical decision to please everyone at once. It is known what address you can find yourself if you follow the path paved with good intentions. And if good intentions are purely arbitrary, it's time to cook a separate pot.

As far as the actors are concerned, Coppola cannot be fooled at all. The works of Kidman, Dunst and Fanning are not to be found fault with. It's also nice to watch Colin Farrell . He quickly took off to the Hollywood Olympus in the early 2000s, but then he got lost in supporting roles in good films or in the first in mediocre ones. Now the actor is experiencing a career revival. A couple of years ago, he dreamed of becoming a lobster at Lanthimos, now he has starred at Coppola , and not far off is "The Killing of a Sacred Deer" by the same Lanthimos . It cannot be said that his hero in "Fatal Temptation" is a fundamentally new image in his career: we have already seen scenes of seduction in his performance, and hysteria, and eloquent glances. But once again create a character

The mansion, where all the action takes place, becomes a separate silent hero of the picture. At first, it seems to be almost a paradise in the midst of the war. The glare of the sun plays on its windows, music sounds in its rooms. But the further, the more often instead of the sun - burning candles, and instead of pastel colors - menacingly dancing shadows on the walls. As if darkness penetrates not only the rooms of the mansion, but also captures those who live within its walls. Gradually. Scene by scene. Until the final sunrise.

Sofia Coppola has long established herself as an independent author, and not just as a child of a genius parent. Such a creator and a remake of a good film shoots with talent and taste. And the award at the Cannes Film Festival for Best Director is just another confirmation of this.
