Review of the movie Girl from Denmark. Portrait of Lily Elbe

A conversation about "The Girl from Denmark" should start with a disclaimer: this is a movie for people who are open and understanding, everyone else will be simply disgusted from beginning to end. However, it should be noted that this is primarily a love story and, secondarily, about a man who believed that a woman was imprisoned in his body. No matter what principles, religious, ethical or others, you would not proceed, no matter how incomprehensible to you the suffering, humiliation, pain through which Einar Wegener had to go through, a real dastk artist, on the basis of whose life "The Girl from Denmark" was shot, this is not a reason to bombard this marvelous portrait with condemning responses based on rejection of the very phenomenon of transgender. This is the very case when you should forget about the differences and include your humanity by 100, or better 200 percent.

Oscar winner Tom Hooper made a very tender movie, but in terms of a whole set of parameters, it does not reach the emotional juiciness that the story itself assumed. Nevertheless, the path of the heroes turned out to be eventful and therefore interesting, mainly thanks to the fantastic acting works of Eddie Redmayne and Alicia Vikander, who managed to convey all the vulnerability of their characters, but at the same time retain the determination and fantastic courage of both Einar and his wife Gerda.

Einar, or more correctly, Lily Elbe, is not only one of the most famous transgender women, she was also one of the first. Einaru's sex reassignment operations were performed when words had not yet been invented to describe his position. Naturally, it seemed to everyone around him even stranger and more unnatural, than today. Redmayne broadcasts a sensual, wounded soul to the screen with no less skill than Stephen Hawking's torment, but he has not much to do in this movie, which makes the role seem less significant. Although he demonstrates an incredible experience and it is surprisingly easy to see a woman in him, as if she is really there.

The story itself prefers to center around Einar's wife, Gerda, and Vikander, who plays her, who becomes a guide viewer into Lily's world. This perhaps explains why the focus of the camera is so often concentrated on it. After all, it will be much easier for Gerda to understand and accept for most viewers than Lily, who, as the story develops, practically sucks Einar into herself, leaving Gerda with nothing. This is a real tragedy and do not empathize with the heroes, all the more so brightly and easily played, only the coldest heart can.

Even the script flaws do not so much harm the movie, but simply do not allow it to properly spread its wings. The plot seems to be enslaved and biased selective, moreover, it only reflects real events to a small extent. The real story, even in its most general outline, sounds much more complex than what David Ebershoff and Lucinda Coxon wrote. However, Tom Hooper made the obvious director's choice to show the transformation of the hero in detail, emphasizing it with a beautiful leitmotif of pure love and practically ridding the tape of any social commentary. This is why other movies like “ Still Lawrence ” reveal transgender issues in a broader and richer way.

Hooper doesn't do anything special with the material either. Danny Cohen's picture has an artistic touch, making the entire movie look like one long moving picture. A whole gallery of paintings, without getting up! Most of the shots are constructed in a special Hooper's way, but the movie is nothing new for the director. It is a complete piece, made with great attention to detail and acting, but never surprising throughout the entire viewing.

Listen to the same `` Danish Girl '' even nicer than watching. The music of Alexander Despla bewitches and turns the whole soul inside out. Absolutely brilliant, lyrical, true soul of the whole movie, at the same time humiliating the injustice of the world and giving hope for a brighter future, for a change.

This movie was made for a reason, and let this year's Oscar-winning American academics bypassed, the influence of “ Girls from Denmark ” the movement towards a more moral, equal world cannot be underestimated. After all, he, along with “ Carol ” (published in USA on March 10), opens eyes to the fact that people differ from each other only in their sores, in other words, their appearance. Inside we are all the same, and compassion is the main virtue.
