Review of the movie Survivor. Ballad of a Soldier

" Survivor " Peter Berg is a rare war drama that lacks even a bit of politics. This is primarily a story about courage, brotherhood and moral choice. The real story, based on the book by Marcus Luttrell, amazes with the realism of everything that happens. This is especially apt to compare the Survivor with the painting `` Saving Private Ryan '', which also showed the full devilish power of bullets, explosions and hatred.

Peter Berg has been studying the story of the sole survivor of the American special forces team during the military operation in Afghanistan in 2005 for five years. From the very beginning of the movie, one can see how important it is for him to tell about these people and their heroism, not their heroism. Painstaking work could not go unnoticed, the most important thing is visible on the screen – a piece of the soul embedded in the picture. At the same time, the director manages to draw the viewer into the narrative and not let go until the credits, using a variety of techniques from floating camera work to sound effects.

The latter, by the way, did not receive a nomination for Oscar. Sometimes you seriously feel yourself in the thick of things, where the roar of explosions develops into a howl of eardrums, overlapping all other sounds. When you look at the soldiers rolling down the rocky slopes, you involuntarily squint and shudder. It's not difficult to imagine how painful it should be.

However, since Berg focuses on the brotherhood of the main characters and their willingness to sacrifice themselves to save each other, the main task fell on the shoulders actors. They all, starting with Mark Wahlberg and ending with Ali Suliman, they did the best they could - played honestly and truthfully, without unnecessary dramatization and replay. Indeed, in fact, he plays people who bravely fulfill their duty, despite the pain, blood and threat to life. At the same time, Taylor Kitsch, who continues to strengthen the foundation of his career, and Alexander Ludwig, who becomes a serious dramatic actor, stood out.

The whole story is based on the fact that you just have to go back. To the family, to plans and such insignificant, it turns out, problems. Through an endlessly long chase through the forest and rocks, during which your breath stops and popcorn does not go down your throat. Like no war movie, this one is not complete without severed limbs and sentimental scenes of wound healing. Peter Berg decides to show everything as realistically as possible, with a fair amount of patriotism, but at least without flags flying to the solemn music.

" Survivor " expectedly a better movie than Peter Berg's past work, Battle of the Sea, but also an unexpectedly warm movie that rises on a par with the best representatives of its genre. This is a story about real brothers-in-arms who walk shoulder to shoulder through battle, hardships and serious trials, but remain human until the very end. People to be proud of.
