Review of the movie Iron Grip. Man of Iron Grip

Westerns as a genre have been in limbo throughout the 21st century. Films about the Wild West are practically not released, and those that are released fail at the box office. In 2010, the Coen brothers finally change that tradition, and their Iron Grip becomes a real hit in the American box office. But here a very strange situation arises: on the one hand, the genre needs a commercial hit more than ever to revive its popularity, and on the other hand, this tape does not really deserve so many honors. She was trite overestimated.

Plots in westerns have always been very simple (usually something like "Transfer a bandit from point A to point B '') and `` Iron grip '' does not change this tradition. The story tells us how a fourteen-year-old girl hires a young ranger and an elderly marshal and goes with them to find her father's killer. However, this path will be very long.

When you see the names of the Coen brothers in the credits, you initially expect that in the movie, despite on a simple storyline, there will be some kind of zest or just a memorable style. But, alas, from the Coens themselves, in principle, almost nothing remained here: most of the characters are boring, the plot does not present any surprises throughout the entire viewing, and the dynamics of this movie visited only in the last 20 minutes. And this is perhaps the main problem of the picture - there is no energy in it, some kind of adventure spirit, life, if you like. With the works of the Coens, this happens very rarely.

The only thing that the writers can boast of is the elaboration of the main character - her perseverance, unbreakable will and the desire to complete the work started was transferred just fine. The young actress Haley Steinfeld also contributed a lot to this, in whose talent after this role there is no doubt. The rest of the actors, of course, also did not lose their faces in the mud - Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon are very charismatic in their roles, but the roles themselves turned out to be too one-sided. There is no room for deeper play in them. The same can be said about Josh Brolin.

There is practically no action as such, and the one that is, was movieed too pale and, I would say, completely without a spark. So now, of course, they no longer shoot. But, fortunately, even with the recreation of the era in which the action of the tape takes place, the creators coped well: costumes, camera work, human customs - all this is done at the proper level.

Reading all this criticism, it may seem that the movie is somehow really bad. Of course, the movie cannot be called a failure, and at least once it is worth watching and appreciating, especially for fans of the genre. But for an Oscar nominee and owner of an incredible box office (within the genre), he turned out to be too mediocre (especially if you remember the names of the directors). The same `` Train to Yuma '' with a roughly similar plot (there the characters also went from one point to another) was much livelier, better quality and more spectacular.
