For the Argonaut Ben Affleck, both the viewer and the critics look especially intently: so that after the success in 2012 he would not try to lower the degree of his creativity. In the new movie "The Law of the Night," the director enthusiastically takes on material and fake supplies, trying to stay on course. Affleck feels the texture and tries to weave the golden fleece. However, many are already dissatisfied with the voluminous statement soaked in cigarette smoke. Ill-conceived drama, illogicality, expectation of a more competently assembled movie – the audience cannot be fooled. Even a movie gangster like Ben Affleck. But everything is not so gloomy: even Caravaggio's paintings had gaps.

Tormented by the inertia of World War I, Joe Coughlin (Ben Affleck) arrives from France to Boston during the Roaring Twenties. Sometimes they are also called "roaring" - the whistle of bullets was often added to the polyphony of jazz and car horns, but the hero is no stranger to it. And now we would say that Joe's jetleg has changed for a bootleg - illegal trade in alcoholic beverages. However, at first everything goes well: the hero is covered by his father, who works in the police. Joe raids, and sleeps during the day. But, as befits noir, a femme fatale appears from the deck of cards with the most tender name Emma, played by Sienna Miller.

The chiseled blonde is the lover of an influential smuggler. Here, even the father (the brilliant Brendan Gleeson) is unable to help: the lovers spend all their time together. The cameraman Robert Richardson, who has been movieing with Tarantino and Scorsese for a long time, is also an invisible company for us: he has done a great job "drawing" the characters. Erotic scenes are shot with taste, reminiscent of painting and forbidden dreams of spectators. The "law of the night" is filigree from a visual point of view: you want to touch it. Crispy diadem of the heroine, coldish handles of Packard and Lincoln, honey interiors — everything is thought out and "shoots" without misfires. The creation of the (cinematic) world by Robert Richardson went off with a bang, but the narrative is lame, like a retired gangster.

As you know, "The Law of the Night" is based on the novel by writer Dennis Lehane, and Ben Affleck himself adapted the material. All the rides in The Law of the Night are present: bullets bite into bodies and cars, barrels of rum explode, heroes are severely beaten, the heroine's lipstick lies flawlessly. And through the mouth of Graziela (Zoe Soldana), sometimes the truth is spoken: both the pawn and the king after the game will be in the box. "Law of the Night" is a movie about the war of the worlds, about their closest contact and consequences. It would seem that friction and conflict should have ignited the screen, but the movie did not reach the desired temperature in two hours.

Fresh milk is pleasant to the body, but for a picture of this caliber, something hotter is needed. In many ways, the picture fell out of the cage due to the not entirely successful game of Ben Affleck: in this movie, the image of the controversial hero Joe is not remembered, but he was supposed to become the core of the movie, become the law of the night. Emanations do not reach the viewer at all.

You will cheer up a little at the moment when Joe enters the hall, deftly removes the press card from the headdress of an unremarkable man, inserts it into his hat like a feather, and goes to look for Emma – Such energetically charming scenes are lacking in the movie. Next – a drop of senile gangster blood, rapidly falling into a transparent glass and dissolving in water as quickly as if there had never been a person. Figuratively, in an adult way.

But, dissipated in the timing of the movie, the story turns into a weak ale. It seems that in order to speak on such dashing topics, you need to be a bit of a bad guy, and in some places a crazy joker, pouring charisma on the viewer from under a stylish hat, and in the end, completely killing on the spot. Affleck, on the other hand, remained the mood in "Operation" Argo. It is clear that the dry law. But someone must intoxicate the viewer. Otherwise, the operation will fail. And the golden fleece will darken.
