Review of the movie Descendants. Big land in a small paradise

Hawaii – amazing place. A real branch of paradise on Earth, with which few places on the planet can compete for this title. Virgin beaches here side by side with skyscrapers, primeval tropical beauty – with civilization. Idyll, in a word. However, the locals are unlikely to agree with this, especially – Matthew King (with the appearance of George Clooney). The real estate lawyer, who himself is the holder of the ten hectares of palm trees, rocks and sand inherited from his great-great-grandfather, has no time to notice all this beauty. His wife is in a coma, relations with her daughters are strained, and then, according to the new property law, he and his numerous relatives will own their hectares for a maximum of seven more years. And new problems arise every day. Alexander Payne introduces Descendants quot; - a touching movie adaptation of the novel of the same name by Kaui Hart Hammings about life.

Released in the world at the end of last year, this year this movie has already managed to collect a good harvest of nominations and movie awards, the loudest of which, to date are two Golden Globes and five Oscar nominations. And, I must say, the movie deserves it.

"Descendants" - simultaneously touching and funny movie. Even in spite of all the grief that fell on the main characters, certain scenes make you smile, and the behavior of some characters to pain and a bitter grin reminds of the dark sides of human nature. Colorful characters do not behave like weak-willed dolls, but, ignoring all sorts of standards of Hollywood tragedies, act like living people. Each of them has a sense of character, each is individual, and acts only in proportion to the environment and his own emotions. Sometimes there is a feeling that the whole movie is – just the most skillful work of a gifted operator, secretly from everyone who captured a significant episode from the life of a wealthy but unhappy family.

In addition, both the author of the book and the director boldly and safely disregard all modern traditions and, at the same time, imposed senseless ethics. For example, the silly principle that the dead are good or nothing here, fortunately, is not the case. There is no indefatigable, boundless altruism here either. Likewise, ostentatious compassion is lacking. On the other hand, there is hypocrisy that looks true from the outside, and that is why it is truly funny; hatred, albeit restrained within the framework of the criminal code, yet undisguised; bitterness mixed with jealousy – and all this is like in real life.

In other words, the characters do everything as they see fit, and not as society requires, thereby only enhancing the overall realism of the picture. No sugar, no movie stereotypes that require one or another model of behavior, depending on the situation. After the movie, it is difficult to doubt that feelings are much more important than a set of rules imposed by people on each other and proudly called etiquette.

It is impossible to remain silent about the relationship of the heroes, on which, in fact, a large part of the movie is built. Equality in this regard is, of course, unacceptable. Conformity – much more likely behavior. Son-in-law, currying favor with his father-in-law, expresses open hostility towards his own, albeit only potential, son-in-law. A daughter, whose attitude towards her father from her first appearance to the final credits is constantly evolving, so that in a few days she has more in common with him than, obviously, in her entire previous life. Relatives whose personalities range from `` a consummate smug bastard '' to a `` good sympathetic man '', of course, they perceive the hero in completely different ways. Needless to say, what, again, this leads to?

And, it would seem, in other movies the characters are also, in general, not made for a carbon copy. But in Descendants This is felt especially sharply, thanks to which the perception of this movie is decidedly different from the perception of most other movies.
The storytelling is as unpredictable as real life. Events, as luck would have it, obey Murphy's law (meanness, in our opinion), presenting the heroes with unpleasant surprises with each new chapter. And you seem to know what should be next and how it will all end, but by the middle you realize that you don't understand anything, and you swim, along with the heroes, along the immense sea of life, carefully transferred by the creators to the screen.

Game, unfortunately, aging George Clooney deserves special admiration. Looking at him in this role, you understand why he was given the Golden Globe. Play a hereditary landowner, tormented by a whole range of very different feelings – it is necessary to try. And to play him so that by the end of the movie he seemed almost native - this is aerobatics. That, how he rushes from one to another, simultaneously trying to figure out both his problems and himself, he simply cannot but arouse sympathy. You feel sorry for his hero, and you just want to step through the canvas and take his side, helping him to clean up all the mess that his wife made.

Shailene Woodley, who played Matt's daughter, turned out to be no less surprising. In addition to her attractive appearance, she also manages to please with how she gets used to the role. Sincerely and without the slightest shadow of tension, her character on the screen develops like a real one. And, moreover, it evokes genuine sympathy. The same cannot be said about her boyfriend, played by Nick Krause, who manages to make himself hate from the very first minutes. Then this feeling changes sharply to the opposite as the story and character of his character are revealed. br />
Alexander Payne managed to movie the `` live '' movie. A symphony of acting, directing, Hawaiian folk music and other technical work, which genuinely conveys the realities of everyday life on the screen, flavored with Hawaiian flavor, softening the atmosphere and flavored with bright characters, acts as if he himself experienced and felt everything that happened on the screen. And you understand how much all these problems of fathers and children, jealousy and hatred, and the bitterness of loss look temporary and passing against the background of a huge life canvas and a change of generations. For everything changes, and life continues on its way like waves until it breaks on rocks or dissolves in the sand.
