Review of the movie Silence. Eastern elegy

One of the most anticipated movies not only for the viewer, but also for the director himself, who spent about 28 years on "Silence" - almost the whole life of Adam Driver (33 years old) or Andrew Garfield (also 33), who played in the movie. As you know, Christ was 33 years old when he was crucified ... The plot is taken from the novel by Shusaku Endo - a Japanese writer who, fortunately, unlike Japan of the 17th century, is "open" to the whole world: in 1969 his novel "Silence "was translated into English and later into other languages.

All his life Endo has pondered Christianity in his home country, and the novel introduces the kakure-Kirishitan (Japanese Christians) to the times. For a long time they were not oppressed, but in the 16th century missionaries began to be regarded by the shogunate as a threat to power, so a period of persecution began. During this time, thousands of Christians were executed. After reading the novel, Martin Scorsese became interested in the material: religion is a leitmotif in his life as well. The master worked on the script with Jay Cox for about 15 years, and then he was finally able to get the "outlet to the sea" - funding. Therefore, reflecting on the short life of the wolf, the director rushes into the 17th century to tell the viewer about the life of the trinity: Padre Sebastian Rodriguez (Andrew Garfield), Padre Francisco Garppe (Adam Driver) and teacher Cristovana Ferreira (Liam Neeson).

In an army of two, the disciples travel to Japan to find Ferreira, who is rumored to have denied God. Arriving in the village, they watch in horror as Christians are faced with a choice: either to step on fumi-e (the image of Jesus Christ), or to die. Scorsese's thought is not dogmatic, it descends on the viewer in a light fog: how difficult it is to take one step. The movie tells about preachers, but he himself does not preach or torture the viewer, but only leads him through the "steep" Japanese landscapes, making him feel the complexity of life. The author's authority does not stand above the narrative, rigidly moving it, it is dissolved in the eastern environment. Sfumatic landscapes, Rembrandt portraits, rhythmically arranged fans of the Inquisition - the picture was movieed by cameraman Rodrigo Prieto, known for the movies Brokeback Mountain, " Babylon "," Beautyful "," Operation "Argo", "Passengers". "Silence" may well receive an Oscar 2017 for Best Cinematography (the picture has already been officially nominated).

The environment is carefully rendered, naturally, the operator created a new reality, not a simulation. You may not believe in God, but you believe in the incredible truth of the image: despite the different mentality, everyone feels pain when subjected to such aesthetic "torture" (which is not an idea for modern crazy fans of happening), like ocean emerald waves.

The blue color of water, smoky green-blue expanses - the short-wavelength range contributes to compression, setting the viewer to look inside himself, to almost three-hour introversion - in general, to search for his Absolute. "Silence" acts on the viewer like meditation, led by the honest, wise teacher Scorsese, who does not use foolish tricks. The picture looks quite extravagant among the other works that are now offered in cinemas, it has its own special "metabolism".

Nowadays, movies are being made about alternative realities, transitions to other worlds, travels to other galaxies. All this in the new movie by Martin Scorsese, if you look closely. The key to understanding the movie is its composition, which is built according to the rondo principle: the hum of nature at the beginning and the same powerful polyphony of cicadas, ocean and thunderstorms (it is a pleasure to watch the credits) at the end: everyone has the right not only to silence, but also to speak, to your personal space.
