Baz Luhrmann's movie The Great Gatsby, which opened the 66th Cannes Film Festival, did not generate much enthusiasm among the early audiences. According to The Hollywood Reporter, at the end of the session, the audience applauded, rather out of politeness.

The reception was much colder than the reaction to another project by the Australian director - Moulin Rouge, which world premiered in 2001 in Cannes.
