The Union of Cinematographers of USA has approved the Ethical Charter of Cinematographers, which will become a recommendatory act for all figures in the domestic movie industry. As explained on the organization's website, the Charter is a set of "basic moral and ethical" principles that should guide moviemakers in their work.

It, in particular, emphasizes that "freedom of creativity is inseparable from the responsibility of the artist, from his awareness of his moral and civic duty." The authors of the document undertake the obligation "not to subject historical facts and biographies of famous personalities to subjective and opportunistic distortions" and "not to oppose the spectacularity of movies to their spiritual content."

The Charter also calls to abandon the propaganda of violence, aggression, "the use of alcohol, tobacco and drugs", as well as to be guided by "the highest ethical and aesthetic ideals." The Union's leadership calls on USA moviemakers who agree with the provisions of the Charter to declare this in any written form.

The full text of the document is available on the official website of the Union of Cinematographers of USA.
