The BBC One Doctor Who Christmas Special, starring Nick Frost as Santa Claus, outscored its rival – ITV's Downton Abbey Christmas special on Thursday night 25 December 2014. A similar situation occurs for the second year in a row, although, in general, all TV shows on Christmas night performed the worst compared to 2013.

Special edition of the sci-fi series "Doctor Who" with Peter Capaldi and Jenna- Louise Coleman gathered 6.34 million viewers from the screens. Last year, the same figure was 8.29 million. This is quite understandable, since in the Christmas episode there was a meeting of two incarnations of the Lord of Time – The Eleventh and Twelfth Doctors, played by Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi, respectively.

On December 25, 2014, 5.84 million viewers watched the Christmas episode of Downton Abbey. This is the lowest ranked Christmas episode in the show's history. By comparison, in 2013, the Crowley family was watched by 7.01 million people.

Last year, the BBC One Christmas special, Mrs Brown's Boys, became the most watched TV show on UK television on 25 December, attracting 9.4 million people. This year, the comedy, produced by Irish screenwriter and actor Brendan O'Carroll, succeeded in repeating last year's success, yielding only to Queen Elizabeth II's welcoming speech.
