Star Trek returns to television to mark its fiftieth anniversary. According to The Hollywood Reporter, producer Alex Kurtzman is developing a new version of the popular sci-fi classic for TV.

The series, which CBS has ordered for production, bypassing the pilot stage, will debut in January 2017, first on CBS and then - on the CBS digital platform - CBS All Access. The new version of Star Trek will feature new heroes seeking new civilizations and worlds and exploring current contemporary issues, which has always been a characteristic feature of the original series since its release in 1966.

Worldwide distribution of the series on TV and multiple platforms will be handled by CBS Studios International. Kurtzman ("Star Trek: At the time of this writing, a screenwriter is being sought.
