Deadwood star W. Earl Brown joins the cast of the AMC drama pilot The Preacher, which is an adaptation of the Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon comic series published in the 1990s by Vertigo. According to Deadline, Brown has been approved for the regular role.

Brown will play Sheriff Hugo Root, a man with a mean heart, cold eyes and an unfeeling soul. One of the show's many hideous antagonists, Ruth is the father of the lovable Eugene Root, a fan favorite of the comic book aka Arsface.

The original comic, released between 1995 and 2000, tells the story of Jesse Caster, a preacher from little town in Texas, which almost lost faith, after Genesis, a creature born of an angel and a demon, settled in him. Now Jesse, with the power to force anyone to heed his word, sets out to seek God to ask him a series of questions. On the way, Jesse is accompanied by his ex-girlfriend Tulip O'Hare and his Irish vampire buddy Cassidy.

The main roles are played by Dominic Cooper (Jesse Caster), Ruth Negga (Tulip O'Hare), Joseph Gilgan (Cassidy), Ian Colletti (Airface), Lucy Griffiths (Emily Woodrow) and Elizabeth Perkins (Vila Quinncannon).

The pilot will be produced by Sony Pictures Television and AMC Studios. Seth Rogen will direct the pilot, scripted by Sam Catlin, this year.

Brown's next recurring TV show is True Detectives season 2.
