The Fast and the Furious creator, Justin Lin, has agreed to direct an action movie based on the Hot Wheels series of toys from Mattel. The Hollywood Reporter reports this with reference to its sources.

The project will be implemented jointly by Lin's studio Perfect Storm Entertainment, as well as the Legendary Pictures movie company owned by the Chinese conglomerate Wanda. The production budget for the movie, as well as its possible movieing schedule at the time of this writing, has not been specified.

The Hot Wheels series of toys has been produced by Mattel since 1968 and is one of the most popular in the world. According to official statistics, about five billion toy cars have been sold in total. Mattel produces nine million of these toys each week and sells 10 of them every second.

Many of the Hot Wheels vehicles are quite rare and highly sought after by collectors. Their cost can be measured in tens of thousands of dollars.

Note that Legendary Pictures has been trying to get the Hot Wheels movie into production since 2003. During this time, several well-known scriptwriters and directors participated in the project, but all of them eventually left.
