The famous Georgian director Rezo Chkheidze died in Tbilisi at the age of 88. It is alleged that the People's Artist of the USSR died after a long illness.

The future stage director, screenwriter and teacher was born in 1926 in Kutaisi. In the 40s he was a student of the directing department of the Tbilisi Theater Institute named after I. Sh. Rustaveli. In the 50s he continued his studies at VGIK (Romm's workshop). After graduation, he went to work in the studio "Georgia-Film".

At the beginning of his career, he specialized in documentary movies. He made his feature movie debut with the movie "Lurdja Magdana", based on the work of the Georgian writer Yekaterina Gabashvili. The picture was awarded at the International Cannes Film Festival in 1956.

The most famous work of Rezo Chkheidze was the war drama "Soldier's Father" based on real events, released in Soviet theaters in 1964. The movie was so popular that a monument to the soldier's father was erected in a village in Kakheti, where its protagonist Georgy Makharashvili was from.

Since 1973, Rezo Chkheidze headed the Georgia-Film studio, served as secretary of the Union of Cinematographers of the Georgian SSR.
