Dunkirk starts worse than Pearl Harbor

Preliminary projections for the opening box office of Christopher Nolan's "Dunkirk" have undergone significant downward adjustments. According to Variety, an estimate of viewers' interest suggests that the movie will earn about $ 40 million in North America in the first weekend.

Note that back in May 2017, a start was predicted at around $ 60 million. If the latter prediction turns out to be true, it will be the weakest start for a Christopher Nolan movie in the last 10 years. Dunkirk will earn significantly less than 2001's Pearl Harbor ($ 59 million) and possibly Inglourious Basterds ($ 38 million).

The reasons for such a weak start are called the very weak awareness of young Americans about the events of World War II in general and the lack of interest in the history of Operation Dynamo, as a result of which about 300 thousand soldiers of the anti-Hitler coalition were actually saved.

Nolan himself repeatedly urged not to consider his new project a military drama. It stars Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Mark Rylance, Kenneth Branagh, Harry Styles, James D'Arcy, Anairin Barnard, Jack Lowden and others.
