Legendary Pictures has acquired the movie rights to Frank Herbert's science fiction novel Dune. This is reported by The Hollywood Reporter. An official press release on the matter states that the studio intends to produce not only feature movies, but also various television projects based on its new intellectual property.

The work takes place in the distant future on the sandy planet Arrakis, where a unique spice is extracted, which makes interstellar travel possible. The plot is built around the heir of the Atreides house, Paul Artreides, who, after the coup, hides in the desert and ends up with the Aboriginal tribe, the Fremen, with the help of which he hopes to regain power. The novel touches upon a whole layer of problems, including environmental, political and others.

In 1984, "Dune" was movieed by David Lynch. Key roles were played by Dean Stockwell, Patrick Stewart, Virginia Madsen, Max von Sydow, David Lynch, Brad Dourif, Kyle McLoughlen, Sean Young, Linda Hunt, Jurgen Prokhnov and others. Despite the fact that the picture failed at the box office, it earned the status of a cult.

Paramount has been trying to negotiate with Frank Herbert's heirs for years to movie a remake, but failed and in 2011 abandoned the idea.

Terms of work on a new movie adaptation are not specified.
