Sony to create a cartoon based on Emoji

Sony Pictures Animation battled two other Hollywood studios to win the right to create an animated movie based on Emoji, a system of ideograms and emoticons used in emails. This is reported by the publication Deadline.

The project will be based on the original ideas of Anthony Leondis, who previously created such cartoons as "Igor" and "The Department of Otherworldly Affairs". His vision interested Paramount Studios and Warner Bros., but Sony's proposal was most likely preferred. It is worth noting that Sony acquired the rights only to a specific version of the script, but not to the concept itself, so other competing projects on this topic should be expected in the near future.

Emoji appeared in Japan in the 90s of the last century and at first were used only as pictograms. The popularity of characters was so great that very quickly they were included in the Unicode coding standard, which allowed them to be used outside Japan. At the time of this writing, emojis are supported on all operating systems, including their mobile versions.

Terms of work on the cartoon have not yet been specified. Anthony Leondis is expected to direct it.
