Lionsgate has found a new director for the long-suffering remake of the fantasy movie Highlander. According to The Hollywood Reportet, he will be co-creator of the John Wick action movie Chad Stahelski.
"I've always been a huge fan of the original movie ever since I saw it in high school. These beautiful themes of immortality, love and identity are intertwined in such a graceful mythology. It's hard to imagine a better way to create vibrant characters and action-packed scenes." - the director commented. Stunt coordinators from Stahelski's 87Eleven studio, who also worked on John Wick, will take part in the creation of the movie.
As a reminder, the original movie was released in 1986. It stars Sean Connery, Christopher Lambert and Clancy Brown. In the story, immortals fight among themselves in order to use the life force of their opponents. The only way to kill one of them is to cut off the head. The first movie was followed by three full-length sequels and two television series.
Studio Lionsgate has been trying to launch a remake of the movie since 2008, but failed each time. Various Hollywood stars have played the lead role.
