Peter Jackson and his wife Fran Walsh will lead the screenwriting and production of Mortal Machines, a series of science fiction novels by writer Philip Reeve. This is reported by Comingsoon. The first movie will be directed by Jackson's protege Christian Rivers, who has worked long goals with the New Zealand director as production designer and special effects creator.

Reeve's four dystopian and dieselpunk books are set in a post-apocalyptic future. After a terrible Sixty-minute war that led to geological instability, an era of moving cities began, moving around the world and devouring each other, seeking to take possession of the remaining resources and technologies. The main character of the work, fifteen-year-old Tom Natsworthy, meets the disfigured girl Esther Shaw, and this acquaintance threatens to change the world they are used to forever.

Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh acquired the movie rights to the series a few years ago, while still working together on the adaptation of The Hobbit. It is expected that the shooting of the movie will start in the spring of 2017 in New Zealand. Universal studio agreed to finance the project, with which Jackson collaborated before.
