Luther creator Neil Cross will return to the detective genre with BBC One. According to Deadline, the British channel has commissioned the movieing of the six-episode pre-apocalyptic drama "Hard Sun", which will be produced by Kate Harwood's Euston Films.

The series is set in modern London, with detectives Elaine Renko and Robert Hicks – partners and foes. They strive to act according to the law and protect those they love in a world that is crumbling before our eyes. But is there any sense in justice in the face of Armageddon?

Filming will take place in London next year, casting will be announced later. Cross, whose "Luther" will return to BBC One and BBC America later this December in a two-part special, stresses that "Hard Sun" is not science fiction. "Imagine the world you see looking out of your window ... except that he was sentenced to death. There is no hero to come to rescue us; no contingency plan."

Describing the concept, Cross added: "How does it feel to maintain order in a city that is getting closer and closer to the abyss day by day? How does it feel to wake up in the morning? Get out of bed and leave your family to go to work, putting yourself at risk? What about predators? "Murderers, rapists, thieves? Psychopaths, religious fanatics, cult leaders and serial killers? Who will be afraid of punishment in a world like this? Which one is afraid of legal consequences? Does life imprisonment matter now?"
